VA 2017 - GoldenEye 007 Tournament Discussion
« on: August 01, 2017, 11:50:33 am »
While the Mario Kart 64 hype is real for Virginia, there are too many skilled GE players attending this year's meet to not throw a GoldenEye tournament. We have enough players (in fact we might have to do play-ins if more than 16 wants in) to do either four groups of four players and then double elimination, or a big 16-player double elimination bracket.

Link to GoldenEye Sheet

From the RSVP:
Derek Clark
Patrik Nilsson
Jim Barrett
Bryan Bosshardt
Mike Gaydeski
Tyler Wishall
Josh "QB" Lay
David "DK" Kovaz
Trent Hovis
Joshua Nash
Eise Smit
Alec McDonald
Nathan Stinson
Greg Woll
Eddie Lovins
JT "The Ripper" Styron
Tyler "RageQuit" Deel
Qwec

What I suggest is that we do four by four group play similar to Virginia 2012 (four player FFA, LTK, pistols, first to 20 kills; see: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1A2-Zqa9xFAqGKcW6uafODlAHRo2m0lbJl_qzHex-vBU/edit#gid=3). This will speed up the tournament and make it entertaining for the viewers.

The top eight players advances and are seeded accordingly. Later, the top eight players from the group play will compete in a double elimination bracket (1vs1, LTK, pistols, first to 10 kills, best out of three matches).

Thoughts?

I'd be interested in being written in. I'll play my match or two and get rolled, but it'll still be fun :)

I don't have a preference for tourney type.... but 4p/3p does sound like more fun to me

If someone is willing to run this then I'm definitely in. Provided you can accommodate my late arrival which makes fitting in Kart messy enough in itself (same for Greg who I would assume is interested (minus the Kart part)). I like the idea of a 4 player round of 16 to narrow the field down and then 1v1 for final 8.

yeah I'm down if we can find time to make it happen
nothin' moves me more than a groove that soothes me
nothin' soothes me more than a groove that boosts me
nothin' boosts me more, or suits me beautifully
there's nothin' you can do to me; stab me, shoot me

Looks like we're good to go! I'll start setting up the sheet, keeping in mind the MK64 tournament and that some people will arrive later.

First post has been updated with link to the GoldenEye Sheet. We just pulled names from a hat for the seeding. The late arrivals are in a separate group.

Do you have a target timeframe for these matches? Just curious since I'll be cramming in Kart matches as well.

Also might want to set out specific rules in advance such as who gets to choose levels, stand by body rule in 1v1 etc

Thanks for running this Patrik, should be a pretty good tourney.

We're looking to have the 4-player matches done by the time you and Woll arrives. It would be good if Group D can play their matches as soon as possible. If Tyler and Qwec get here late on Thursday, we might have to replace them with reserves. Optimally, an 8-player double elimination bracket would take seven or eight hours to get through. We could do three and a half hours, or so, on Thursday (6-8pm and after midnight) and try to play all the matches in time for the MK64 semi-finals and finals. It would make it entertaining for the stream viewers.

As far as rules, I don't believe we're changing much from the previous years' meets. I'm going to look for rules in old topics, but I believe the highest seeded player in the bracket of 8 (decided by the 4-player play-in matches) will decide whether he wants to choose screen or level first. The loser of the previous match picks the next level. Stand by the body rule is applied for the 1vs1 matches. Best out of three for all the matches, except the finals (best out of five). Obviously, no Oddjob or small characters. Nothing major, and most participants are probably agreeable if there's be any last minute changes. By example, the MK64 rules and brackets seem far more complicated this year.

Okay, this morning we had a discussion and decided to do a 3-player tournament (first to 20 points) instead of 1vs1, in spirit of the 2012 tournament, which seemed like a huge success. It is faster, both game play and overall, more entertaining, and probably a better demonstration of skills. I have spent an hour or two setting up the tournament this morning. I cut Qwec from the tournament because of his post in this thread. If he's not trolling, I'll add him and remove one of the other "reserve players". Levels were determined to give as much diversity as possible. Using a random generator, me and Boss got lucky in the play-in seeding. It is likely that two of the following players will face off in the first tie-breaker if they don't win the first group play: Lovins, Woll, Eise or Jim. The first top player will be eliminated in the first tiebreaker - which seems like a suitable elimination pace.

Suppose that a match takes less than 10 minutes, the grand finals of GE will be played in between the semifinals and finals of MK64 - 45-50 minute exhibition.

I'm glad to hear it was changed to a 3-player format. That was a lot more fun to watch than 1v1 and matches seemed to go much quicker.

the round mgay won, he was down 16-9-8.  The game was over in 3 minutes from there.  (well assuming names were correct, who knows with that tourn heh)

also if rounds are 3-2-1  mgay has 8, but your points don't add up in any of the groups so ???
