Kapap 3 Reflections & Feedback
« on: October 15, 2017, 02:30:36 am »
Keen to hear feedback from as many people as possible!

I'll mainly go over my own runs and the editing.

Sammy attempted to go for better times such as Statue 00 Agent 2:17 but as the release date approached we decided it would be best if he went for easier times, which is how the idea to create a birdiebop segment came about. The result was one of the funniest parts of the video.

The Majora's Mask-esque story segment was recorded using emulator, with various methods such as the moonjump GameShark code and the free camera mode in the hidden debug menu. It turned out pretty well but was limited by various factors such as not being able to move vertically and horizontally at the same time, and loading zones being based upon Bond's current position (which could not be moved at the same time as the camera). The main example of this was Bond being in the frame for the Bunker 2 zoom-out so I thought we might as well make him have a purpose and say hello.

My beach segment took some determination. Initially we took one of my CRTs there but we were unable to film it due to flickering. Using LCD didn't seem authentic at first but it was the only option at this point and it fits with the retiring to play TWINE joke in a way. Power was supplied using a 12 volt to 240 volt inverter from my friend's 4wd parked on the beach. The GoldenEye cartridge used was just the shell, I still have the rest of it at home. The shell got lost in the ocean and may never be seen again unless MH370 is found. When it was time to leave the 4wd got completely bogged and we had to wait for someone to come and fish us out.

The Wheel of Fortune segment was difficult to make. The puzzles are stored in the game as raw text, but I had to find ones that were the same length as AZTEC SECRET AGENT. More experience with ROM hacking would have helped here. After replacing all the puzzles in the game and putting the modified file on the 64drive, I had to hope that it would randomly select one of the AZTEC SECRET AGENTs from the 5000 puzzles. Fortunately it didn't take long for this to happen and I recorded the gameplay.

The runs:
Train Secret Agent 1:29 was meant as a meme time like Dam Secret Agent 1:19 from Kapap 2, mainly so I could use the Morning Train song.

Silo Secret Agent 1:09 - this came fairly quickly in the grind for 1:08. The one shown in the video is a dupe, my first one was 1:09.08 which made me quite salty, but also fully determined to get 1:08. The idea of showing the 1:09 (plus the endscreen in the tour as well) first was to add to the shock that there would be another Silo Secret Agent run from me later on, which proved effective.

Aztec Secret Agent 1:34 - initially I was going to settle for 1:37ish. But the obvious slow parts of the run and potential to bop Jimbo added to the motivation behind getting this time :smirk:

Surface 2 00 Agent 1:27 - what a sick skip. The goal was sub 1:30 and I exceeded both my own and everyone else's expectations in the group.

Silo Secret Agent 1:08 - This took a ridiculous amount of time and 14 1:09 dupes. Tying a Tier 2 time and being up there with the likes of Ace, Marc, and Goose is very special to me. Heaven is a place in Silo.

The rage segment was inspired by the room trashing scene in Citizen Kane. Aztec 1:34 was my baby and Swiss took that away from me with his 1:33 for no reason other than "I just felt like playing it". But the salt wore off and we made something fun out of it. Various things I throw in the video were already damaged and have been replaced such as the record, the Super Famicom, and the Avril poster. The CRT throw was obviously pretty wimpy due to the tight space I was filming in. It landed on the bed and my mate was there to stop it bouncing off.

While Swiss did manage to get four world records he had hoped to get some of the better world records, but the release was already getting pretty late so we had to call it. Nevertheless his part had some great times, songs, and funny ideas.

The Blues segment came together really well. We tried to make it a combination of the famous rage clips plus some underground ones that took a little digging.

Green Project 4 is excellent obviously.

Just like Kapap 2, Luke didn't expect to have a part, but sure enough he got some cooked times. He'll tell you more about the Bank of Melbourne and the runs.

Tons of work went into this and we couldn't have done it without the mates and the community. A big thankyou to everyone involved. I know you can't trust us but Kapap is done forever (but I'm not done making cool videos!). Keen to read everyone's thoughts.

I will be writing up an epic 10k+ word recap and reflections post throughout the week, but to put it shortly, Kapap 3 is one of the best projects, maybe THE BEST project I've ever worked on, and am immensely proud of my own, and everyone in the groups input.

I was kind of surprised I was invited to participate. Huge thanks to the kapap crew for the opportunity. Seeing the whole thing coming together was really sick to see honestly. All of the bouncing of ideas in the process of making it initially and then buildup of excitement as the release approached was insane.

I wish I could have got more times but such is the wageslave life. My caverns 101 was really fun to go for and after I realized how good the box boost could be I knew I had to go for it. Swiss's 101 was what got me thinking about all of it. It was definitely a challenge even hoarding my single time so I'm not sure the hoarding life is for me in the future (for goldeneye at least). It's not that hard to hold back the desire to share my time for me as much as it is holding back new strats to people who are struggling and would not be if I helped them.

Jono's 108 really shocked the house as expected. We all knew he was playing for it and that he was capable of it, but when he actually got it it was still a crazy moment. Even crazier was that we could see (and he could see) 107 in him as well. Some day, perhaps. Luke's 23 nat fail and the 500 cases of swissluck in jungle and fac were a bummer, but all things considering I think they both had very cooked segments (dat fuckin aztec 00). Green the madman continues to streak higher in PD. I still don't know the game well but I know he is a special player with a bright future in that game and he will forever go down as having the first untied in kapap history.

In short, this was a splendid experience... huge props to everyone who contributed and especially jono for putting together his best film yet.

GP4/K3 started for me already late 2016. I was sitting on train 102/127/153 and my goal was invest PA untied. Early 2017, IRL things happened and i lost motivation to play until i moved on in March. Then I finally got a CRT.

Archives 54s : i quickly got 54 sa back on January 12th (which i forgot to upload) but somehow i struggled with 00. And by playing it, stick got worse and had buy a new controller too etc. 00 was done with no box boost.

Runway 22 : shit level

B2 LTK 127 (from 128) : side project i started offline while playing B2 sa/00 last year. Fun level. A death in the exit was featured in the blues segment.

Ext 118 (from 119(3)) : the invest grind was going nowhere and i had to switch for a while. When i quickly got 120 i knew the 118 potential was here. 118 took 15-20 hours from 123. I'm not gonna lie, it was easier than expected, and 117 is definitly possible as a tier 2 WR. I will soon go for it.
This is where the hoarding was really starting for me.

Invest 235 (from 236(3)) : i needed an untied this time and i knew this one was possible without any laser shenanigans after comparing all 236 runs. In fact most runs that goes past the lasers were 235 pace considering the open door at the end. In the end i didn't need it. When i got it, Invest PA was suddenly the center of attention of Boss and Karl, with Boss playing and trying the K7 lure. 235 took 30 hours from 236.

JH Silo 108 happened 10 days later, the true start of kapap 3 definitly.

Silo 124 (from 126(2)) : i really like this level even tho it's obviously frustrating. i had a lot of runs faster runs to 3rd room.

G5 35 (from 36(10)) : at this point i had a feeling we would be short of content and went for some filler time i suppose. G5 with keyboard and bad stick is so shit. both upstairs door were open this run but with the two guard stucks it didn't save time.

In late July i released the first version of green project 4 to the kapap crew (keep in mind i do my part myself). I did the same thing with same timing last year for K2. I wanted to motivate everyone. I also thought i would not be able to play in august but it turs out i could. Archives 54 was cut at this point because my part was too big. It was originaly a montage with some diddy kong racing.

Train 101/124/152 (from 102(2)/126(2)/153) : with some free time during vacation i eventually beat the PRs i was already hoarding. Most of the grind was for SA (124 took 30 hours from 127), agent and 00 came after a single sesh. Yes 124 was really unexpected.

War 25 (from lots of 26) : shit level but needed for popular leader achievement

That was my 4th unhoard campaign in 2 years and a half. Each time i've tried to surprise people with various PRs, unexpected levels and different music styles. I hope i gave some of you the will to play PD over the past 2 years.

I honestly don't know how I got involved this time but I'm sure it all started with a simple DM from Jono. I remember feeling it was a bit too soon to think about another kapap but the mates got me keen and the hoard began. I didn't have many specific goals but I wanted some more records at least, and I barely made my goal of 20 total WRs here. I should mention the time that actually got me into top 10 was Statue SA 2:19. :kappa:

Depot 00 Agent 0:47 - I wanted to get this done for awhile, and as it's an "easy" time, it was a perfect early goal. Pretty horrible level though, you can play perfectly and still wait 10hrs+ for a completion. I was also playing with a 1/10 stick for this so I had to do some irrel movement in the hut to get through clean (that safe :-X). I would guess this took about 15-20 hrs and I had 3 0:48s.

Caverns Agent 1:01 - This time had been on the radar for a while. Keep in mind this was back in March so it was still a pretty nippy time, and I was pretty happy with it. Sadly with the utilization of boxboost and the few rapid ties it got, it was clear 1:01 would be dropping a dozen tiers and sagging hard. This ended up taking less time than Depot so w/e.

Facility Agent 0:43 :nesquik: - Finally got this a few days after cavs but really it hardly felt like a pb. In my mind, 43 was a Kapap 2 time and I "should have had it months ago" etc. I knew no one would be surprised at all to see 0:43 in the vid and had waited too long to hoard it a further 7 months so I just dropped it.

Runway Secret Agent 0:22 - Another low tier time that could be binned quickly. Most of the time spent on this was just figuring out how I wanted to do the nades. 6 hours max.

Silo Agent 1:01 - Way overdue pb coupled with an insane number of runs fucked by the autists in the sat room. There were a couple costly backs and a stuck by ourumov, and I was pacing 1:00 to the open door fairly often so this just felt like an irrel stepping stone that no one would be surprised at. I wanted to try for 1:00 but when doing Kapap one cannot linger for too long and I had spent long enough here.

Aztec Secret Agent 1:33 - It was pretty funny how this all worked out. My 1:37 from last year's hoard was one of my most hated runs and I was itching to improve it after 00A. I had been grinding 00A for a good run with WR strat and despite getting a solid number of openings I wasn't fortunate enough to live one. Eventually Jono got his 1:34 and I was pretty jelly. I never really thought letting the exhaust bay guard boost you through console would be a good idea on SA, but Jono assured me it wasn't bad at all. This also means no orgy to get fucked by after the upload, so I was pretty keen to try it down the road. Then Goose did Aztec speedlore and I just got too keen and had to play it. soz Jono. :kappa: Luke picked up the gack on 00A, Jono and I could share another pair of rivalry times like we did in K2, so this worked out well for the vid.

Bunker 1 Secret Agent 0:21 - Grav and I were both talking about this time early on. Of course we know 0:20 is doable, but it would be silly to grind for when doing a hoard like this (especially with how dumb the luck can be). The luck for 0:21 isn't that insane and I was good with the cams so this was pretty reasonable to get.

1:06 - I randomly decided to try B1 00A and got a no nade complete first try. Definitely wasn't ready for the urn but i'll take the pb. I liked the run and didn't want to waste 95% of whatever song was chosen for a short run like 0:21 so I requested that it be included and the song be shared.

4:08 - Watching Green play Control 00A reminded me that I had yet to play 00A going through the glass so there was an easy pb here. Control was overdone in Kapap as evidenced by the decision to fast forward the protect in my K2 run, so I knew another Control run would have to be neutered the same way to be worth including. This gave me the idea to just violently fast forward the whole run as a bit of a gag.

In the end I failed to achieve my better goals, totaling 25 Jungle Agent 0:51s (almost all with a backboost or two), around 10 53bTs on Facility SA, and various other sorcery. I grinded hard toward the end and was pretty devastated to not catch one last break, but that's the way she goes.

Overall I felt my involvement here was dwarfed compared to Kapap 2, in terms of PRs and creative discussion. For what felt like months I was in this salty vortex of bad xenia animations, multiple backs in cave, hours of no doak and when he's finally there bT, etc etc etc. I don't usually grind like this so I think I finally started to feel the burn and was too salty to let go and think about the vid.

Luckily, Jono and Green really picked up the slack with heaps of great times, Sammy made a really great part from the PRs he managed, Grav got a run in (one of my fav runs in the vid with the song and reaction tbh), and Luke once again managed a cooked part. While I wasn't happy with my part, I'm more than happy with the final product and I'm glad it was such a roaring success. Shoutouts to the boys and especially Jono for cooking it again.

Just watched Kapap 3 for the first time this afternoon. I enjoyed it.

Had the usual outstanding editing from Jonny and his Silo SA 1:08 was a shocking run. Great to see Grav in it too, as well as Sam and Swiss obtaining WRs.

Highlight of course inlude Green's Extraction and Investigation runs as well as Luke's superb Aztec 1:35. Excellent stuff guys.
