Here are my favourites.

10. Selena Gomez - Bad Liar

A minimalistic pop song that simply is just pleasant to listen to.

9. Dua Lipa - New Rules

A catchy and playful tune enhanced by a masterfully executed music video.

8. Little Mix - Power

Energetic and hard-hitting with an ideal chord progression and amazing performances.

7. Carly Rae Jepsen - Cut to the Feeling

One of the best choruses in recent times.

6. Hailee Steinfeld - Most Girls

An empowering song featuring a unique underlying tribal sort of sound.

5. Camila Cabello - Havana

A seductive melody that perfectly captures that Cuban feeling.

4. Lorde - Green Light

Lorde's best song to date.

3. Clean Bandit & Zara Larsson - Symphony

Clean Bandit once again strikes a chord with their blend of classical and electronic.

2. Ed Sheeran - Perfect

Truly wonderful.

and the number 1 song is......

1. Rita Ora - Anywhere

Over the hills and far away
A million miles from L.A.
Just anywhere away with you
I know we've got to get away
Some place where no one knows our name
We'll find the start of something new
Just take me anywhere, take me anywhere
Anywhere away with you
Just take me anywhere, take me anywhere
Anywhere away with you...

A simple love song message that you've heard a million times before, yet is timeless.
This is my favourite pop song of 2017 and features possibly the best pre-chorus in history.
I'd go anywhere with you Rita Ora.

Making a post just to say how crap all these songs are is not allowed.

Goose's Top 10 Pop Songs of 2017

10. Hey Violet - Break My Heart

Teenage girl pop, the most puerile and infectious of all genres.  This song makes great use of what would become the modern trend in 2017, of not having a chorus, rather a "breakdown;" even in pop.  Rena sings of her desire to have a guy "break her heart" as it's one thing she's never experienced yet in her teenage days, showing that girls truly are just out there to feel, and experience. Huge thanks to Qweczol for introducing me to Hey Violet as they do not get radio play here.

9. Taylor Swift & ZAYN - I Don't Wanna Live Forever

I had to include Taylor in this somehow.  Written and recorded in 2016 for the 2017 cinematic presentation Fifty Shades Darker, Taylor was in between album cycles when this came out.  Interestingly, it was the third hit song she had written in three different genres, all through 2016.  Better Man performed by Little Big Town, and This is What You Came for performed by Calvin Harris & Rihanna both had chart topping success in their genres, and so did I Don't Wanna Live Forever.  Looking back now, you can see this may have been Taylor's first dabble into the degenerate world of drugs & sex that caused Reputation to feel lower tier than Red or 1989; but her delivery and feel in this song is truly outstanding.

8. Charli XCX - Boys (Acoustic)

"I need that bad boy to do me right on a Friday // and I need that good one to wake me up on a Sunday // that one from work can come over Monday night // I want them all."  Charli XCX's unabashed desires are too Sirenlike to not become completely enchanted.  The original version has a crazy music video featuring tons of famous "boys", but it is the acoustic version which grabs me more.  "Ooh baby boys" at the end of the song just drives me nuts.  It's uncontrollable.

7. The Chainsmokers ft. Coldplay - Something Just Like This

It seemed like they were going to take over the world with songs like these... they'd only made 5 in a row, all of which were bangers... but somehow abandoned the style for pure crap on the rest of the album.  A fantastic dream about a normal relationship sung by Chris Martin to the Chainsmokers signature synths.  This was supposed to be the song I would use in my hoarded Silo Secret Agent 1:07, but it never came to be.  The build and release is just too epic, the final 60 seconds just immerse you in the dream world they so eloquently paint throughout the song.

6. Carly Rae Jepsen - Cut to the Feeling

The story behind this song is really insane.  It was partly recorded off someone's phone, at the end of the European release of the film Ballerina so pop fans went nuts searching, questing the Earth for the full version.  It was never found.  So the song took on this sort of mythology to it.  The soundtrack wasn't released with the European film, and wouldn't be released until the U.S. film's release; which kept getting delayed.  Randomly in June, on the same day I was actually attending her live symphony show in Toronto, she dropped the track, which just further shows her pop mastery.  Unfortunately the radio & co didn't pick this up which prevented it from going both #1 worldwide and #1 on this list.

5. Charlie Puth - Attention

The most red pilled hit song of the year, Charlie sings about a dumb Stacy who "just wants attention // you don't want my heart."  It's amazing to be able to relate to even mega attractive super stars on the topic of women, proving it's not just me, it's them.  The song is allegedly about Bella Thorne, though Charlie would say in an interview that "it's not who you'd think it's about" just proving the point that this isn't a problem isolated to one woman.  I'm actually surprised this became a hit in 2017, but it did, and its bassline slaps hard.

4. Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee - Despacito

The song that perhaps most perfectly embodies "summer" ever recorded.  I prefer the original, although you can't deny Bieber's presence turned this into arguably the biggest banger in history... Sixteen weeks at #1 USA (tying Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men from 1996), 4.6 billion views & counting.  We finally got to live through a song bigger than The Macarena, and I enjoyed every moment of it.  Whenever I went to the surf shack at my cottage, I'd put $1 in the jukebox machine and play both versions of Despacito.  No regrets.

3. Hailee Steinfeld & Alesso, ft. Florida Georgia Line, watt - Let Me Go

A sleeper banger of the year.  I never heard this song on the radio (though then again, I didn't listen to the radio after Reputation was released) and luckily clicked on it one night on YouTube.  An unbeat, tropic influenced song about the failings of a relationship.  Hailee's acting in the video reminds us why she's an Oscar nominee.  Watt's guitar is just cool, FGL deliver their verse incredibly, and Hailee's plea that "I been hoping somebody loves in the ways I couldn't // somebody's taking care of all the mess I made // someone you don't have to change" wants to be a comforting thought after hot girl dumps you, but in reality we know we'd still be bitter.  Yeah she can wish these things, but it doesn't matter in the end.  But somehow you can still take solace in it.

2. Cashmere Cat ft. Ariana Grande - Quit

I really, really wanted to make this #1.  Opposing the other songs in my top 3, Ariana shares how she just can't quit the guy she's with, despite their disagreements.  This song came on a Spotify playlist while driving to the cottage, and like the lyric video, it's just a perfect song for highway cruising.  The way it feels like Ariana's vocals are suspended in animation by Cashmere Cat's underlying synth, frames them just a little longer to drive them home that much more.  The breakdown is like nothing I've ever heard before.  This song just stays with you.

1. Kygo & Selena Gomez - It Ain't Me

"I had a dream // we were back to seventeen // summer nights and the liberties // never growing up."

As much as I grow older and try to find my place in this world as a man, taking responsibility, facing challenges head on, and weathering the storms life gives you; it's impossible to hear a line like that and not think back on childish ambition, carefree days of young love, summertime and freedom.  Is Selena singing about Justin Bieber in this song?  Would he try to walk with her "through the dark side of the morning?"  Would he need her to rock him "when the sun won't let you sleep?"  As someone who stays up until the break of dawn regularly, again I find myself relating to the reasons why Selena is leaving.  Can a man like myself ever be loved in my current state?  These are the questions pop music can make you reflect upon when it is truly good.  Kygo's classic chopping of Selena's vocals is just unbelievable, true talent.  The bounce of a bright piano mashed in with the synth... "sipping whiskey neat // highest floor of the Bowery // and that was high enough..." There is just too much in this song to get to in a simple forum post.  It is an absolute masterpiece.

"I want to be defined by the things that I love. Not the things I'm afraid of, or the things that haunt me in the middle of the night.  I just think that, you are what you love."  Taylor Swift, Daylight.

So genuinely curious Goose: did Taylor Swift just not produce songs you liked this year, has she changed her style of music, or have you moved on to different artists?

She only released two singles from Reputation; Look What You Made Me Do, and Ready For It?  They're both fine, but not quite good enough to make the cut.  If she releases some of her better songs from Reputation next year, I'm sure they will make the 2018 list.  But there is nothing on Reputation which is as good as her best songs like All Too Well, Sparks Fly, even Wildest Dreams or Style.

Nice list Huzi! I don't think Jono or I were expecting anyone else to post their list, so this was a pleasant surprise to look at.

Honorable mentions:

Sam Smith - Too Good At Goodbyes
I love his voice

Chromatics - Shadow
dsx claims this was released in 2015 but it didn't come to prominence really until it was featured in Twin Peaks The Return

Lorde - Homemade Dynamite remix ft. Khalid, Post Malone & SZA
Lorde had a killer year and her two songs posted above would be in my top 10

Selena Gomez ft. Marshmellow - Wolves
The 'other' good Selena song of the year

Taylor Swift - Getaway Car
https://open.spotify.com/track/0VE4kBnHJUgtMf0dy6DRmW
My favorite song from the new album

Taylor Swift - King of my Heart
https://open.spotify.com/track/7HuBDWi18s4aJM8UFnNheH
My 2nd favorite song from the new album

Post Malone ft. 21 Savage - Rockstar
Hard not to include this as 'pop' when it's been #1 on Billboard and #1 on Spotify EVERY DAY since release

Kendrick Lamar - HUMBLE.
Is this pop?  :nesquik: Not a huge fan but I respect this

Demi Lovato - Sorry not Sorry
I'm not a huge Demi fan but this is pretty good

Cara's take on 2017 pop music

First of all, well done everyone in this topic, I really enjoyed all of your lists! Although I really consider myself a pop music lover, never has there been a year where I felt more astranged from pop music than in 2017. I actually put a great deal of thought into this feeling as I thought it was interesting to figure out the why of it. After some years of not writing music I picked up on songwriting again in 2017, and as a songwriter i've always had a deep passion for good catchy popmusic. Here are some of the thoughts I had recently, curious to hear what some of you think about them.
    • First of all, the obvious. Getting older doesn't help you understand pop culture (i'm 31 now). between 25-30 there have been many pop songs I didn't particularly like but understood the reason why it became popular. Every good pop song has a infectious core to it and I got all of them. In the last two years or so, I sometimes lost the understanding as to why certain songs actually became popular and that frustrated me.
    • More of an elaboration on the first point, but millenials are clearly taking over the charts. Obviously millenials have been part of the charts last 10 years or so, but most of them had a producer/managing team around them of people that weren't. That is coming to an end now. You can notice how everything about new artists are changing. They care about different stuff, feel different about the world, love, work, relationships and basically grew up in a different world. And with that, the themes they sing about have changed soooo much with them. Pop artists hardly sing about big subjects these days, its all small stuff, such as accepting personal flaws (which was a big theme in many pop songs in 2017).
    • The importance of an image of artists has exploded recently. Music only plays a small part in their popularity, their message. Pop artists have become famous people that just happen to make music also. And with that, in my opinion the standards of good songwriting has certainly lowered over the years, but that's not a condemnation. I'm merely saying that it has become less important for artists to write the best song ever over recent years. Songs are more and more forgettable bits of music that come and go, pop songs are hardly written with the purpose to stay forever. For example, repetition in pop songs is exploding over the last years, take a look at this graph from a mathmatical analysis made on thousands of pop songs through the decades:
    Spoiler
    • Also more of an elaboration on the previous point, but artists use so many more channels than charts to get their music across now. You don't have to score a chart hit in order to build a fan base any longer. And that has clearly impacted the things we hear on the radio now. In 2018, artists that don't follow chart songwriting rules have all the reasons to do so, but you won't hear them on the radio any longer. That gap is widening fast.

My thoughts for 2018 and onwards are that popular music will become increasingly less "challenging" from a songwriting point of view (but actually more from a productions pov). Pop music will keep on growing towards smaller roles in pop artists careers and that will have it's impact on the music that's about to be released in the future.

This may all sound very negative, but it really isn't. I actually still enjoyed a LOT of good music in 2017 but I find myself straying off the pop path bit by bit.

I'll close off this post with some pop songs that I actually DID enjoy a lot, but I don't think I can make a top10.

Katy Perry - Chained To The Rythm
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gsGhdZDC-0
Notice how Katy Perry's lyrics have changed drastically with her latest album. Her lyrics fit the pop music world perfectly which I described earlier in my post. Great job of her production team to act accordingly and not release another cherry pop album. The song has amazing production (with a lot of retro aspects) and has pretty good chord progression in the chorus.

Chainsmokers - about anything they released late 2016 / early 2017
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhU9MZ98jxo
Same story, perfect lyrics in about every song that fully capture the stuff millenials worry about. Posting stuff on the internet, complicated love situaions, creating and enjoying moments. Amazing productions, these songs sound so huge on big festival systems. Wowwzeee

Harry Styles - Sign of the  Times
    Times https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0GKGpObgPY
Pretty cool how HS has transformed himself from boyband dude to respectable artist within no time. No sure how he pulled that one off, but well done and great song. Bit too depressing for me personally, but very well written nevertheless.

Ed Sheeran - Castle On The Hill

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Qp5vcuMIlk
This feels like more of a mandatory mention. There was a point in 2017 where Ed Sheeran had like 15 songs in the chart here in The Netherlands haha. You literally couldnt find a radio staion that wasn't playing his songs at a certain time. This song was my favorite of his album though. Very much like the nostalgic feel he creates. Although it's written as a hit song, it's not anywhere fast-food material.

    Niall Horan - Slow Hands
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBmNcLBaPUE
Good example of how production can increase the quality of an otherwise very standard song. Vocal is produced so incredibly well with the way it's been chopped to pieces, gated etc.

The Weeknd - I Feel It Coming ft. Daft Punk
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFLhGq0060w
Just put this on when you're driving on the highway and enjoy. Done this sooo many times in 2017. What a beautiful, warm and musical production by Daft Punk and amazing MJ like vocals by The Weeknd.

There is more stuff I enjoyed but I can't find them at the moment haha. I guess you get the idea of the songs that I preferred last year. I would have listed some songs from Bruno Mars but his album was actually released late 2016 despite many of his songs from that album reaching the charts in 2017.

Favorite Album of 2017: The Search for Everything by John Mayer
Yeah I realise this is a very safe and cheesy choice for a musician but literally every song on this album is written and produced masterfully.

    Cheers to a musical 2018![/list]
