RTA vs IGT Timing Investigation
« on: February 21, 2018, 10:45:33 pm »
This thread is for timing the top 20 or so runs for each level to see if any runs deviate wildly from expected range of real time given its in game time. This info should help us better understand the relationship between the two and could possibly reveal a cheated run if someone was lazy enough to not make the video length check out :nesquik:

I will be updating the end frame for timing purposes for each level shortly. For now, consider the frame you warp a final door or the frame you lose sight of your ammo on screen to be the last frame you end on. The first frame will always be the frame the ammo shows up on screen. If you are getting boosted at the end of a run that you use the ammo leaving to time, just approximate where you think it would be going away. Being a tenth off isnt a big deal... we are looking for major divergences.

Reminds me of the old train HN 104 vs RI 103 comparison. Big divergences are definately possible without cheating.

Big divergences are definately possible without cheating.

Is there a consistent way on every level to measure the exact framerate of the video compared to the actual game? Not every video will come out at the exact same FPS after all the digital to analog to digital to digital to .... conversions.  Some levels have things like pause animations that could possibly be used for calibration?

Dunno about every level, but cinema text and on-screen timers might be good options. Pause menu clock/ammo-pickup texts etc could perhaps be tried as well.

Yeah I know huge divergence doesnt mean cheating, its just a possible first breadcrumb for a fishy run. I expect many of marc's converter runs to be screwy RTA times for example, which appears to be true from what data we've gathered.

Maybe also include what version each run was done on? Could also help spot weird times. Say if pal is average +1 delta and ntsc -1 delta and suddenly someone has -1 on pal, that might be a sign something is off.

I timed your 43, the timer started the first frame ammo appears on screen, and stopped the first frame that all of the objectives/ammo disappeared
