I have forgotten how hard this is
« on: March 04, 2018, 01:00:21 am »
Hello everyone.

It has been a long time since I have visited this site. For some reason speedrunning Goldeneye has spawned itself in my brain again. After visiting my parents who have kept the console and the games, I have painfully started to speedrun this again, only if it has been a few days. I found Ryan White on youtube and enjoyed the uploads, which drew me in a little more.

You can find me on the rankings, I think I am in the high 100's or low 200's, as Paul George. It's nothing great to look at. I started this back when I was 13, now 28, and got the first WR, Bunker Agent :18. From what I recall, speedrunning was difficult then but not terribly hard.

I am able to achieve most the times that I once obtained, but cutting the seconds down seems like chiselling away at a brick wall with a feather. Dam SA I can get my old time of 1:26, but 1:25 seems hard to achieve, even though I have gotten runs that seem quicker than that. The facility runs seem difficult now, though I remember them being easy. Bunker 2 is difficult now, though I enjoying playing that level back then, as well as silo.

Has anyone else that has been around  for a long time run into this? The difficulty it is to speedrun? The controller feels strange, though it is getting easier to use. The joystick is still worn and bad. The lag in the game is terrible and so on. Does anyone do something unique or special to cope?

As of right now, this is just a hobby but i look forward to continuing it, and if times improve, maybe seriously diving into it.

I remember your name from from like 15 years ago. Thought you might be Plum for a second, but your grammar is too good.

It was easier for you when you returned? It kind of makes sense I guess, getting old times does seem easier than the past, but getting new times,  :rollin:

I remember your name too, was that plum thing a joke back then? I don't remember.

wow it's PAUL GEORGE!

I will never forget when Greg Larkin thought you were fake.  Now here we are, 12 years later, and you may be able to pass Larkin within a few months (who has been paying solidly since 2006.)

Plum was a British asshat that made up a fake female account and I think it was Karl that exposed him. It seems like his name was Paul too so sorry for the implication of any relation.

I’ve attempted a modest return to speed running (also because of Goose and his youtube channel), and the controller feels fine. However, learning 2.x has been strange to because I’ve always played with my left hand grasping the far left handle of the controller rather than the middle one just under the joystick. I’m weird, but it works for me. I would suggest learning 2.x while you’re getting the feels back. It’s worth it.

My main problem is lack of free time because life is gay and always getting in the way. I have some stupid career that makes me get dressed and go out for like 8 hours a day and not play video games because I don’t get free rent like Marc Rutzou. And my kids are always like, “Daddy, I’m hungry,” and “Daddy, you missed my ballet recital” so it gets really distracting.

That, and I hurt my foot recently so I haven’t been able to play at all, which doesn’t seem relevant but it actually is in my case. Anyway, welcome back.

Lol, nope not fake. Just have the name of a famous basketball player now. Did he just think I was a troll? I vaguely remember things from then. Is NGamer still around? I saw the come issue was addressed in the video.

So thats the plum thing. I just remember the name for some reason. In response to 2.x , only one of the controllers work now which is a shame. Been looking online but everything is knock off third party controllers. I guess a vintage video game place around here would probably have some. I remember when some times were hypothesized, Bunker A :17 for example. It's crazy to see what has been accomplished after so many years, even recently with Jobst.

I have a really stressful job now and I mostly spend my time in the morning in the gym. No kids here or relationship. Although I do like traveling. Taking a two week trip in April to Japan, will be my second time there.

Thank you for the welcome, it's good to see you're still here.

Greg Larkin used "evidence" such as you having decent Silo times (leaderboard at some point) but also having 10:00 on Egypt.  "There's no way that could be possible unless you're fake!"

In 2018, literally half of the top WR holders have similar timespages.

Oh yes! I remember that lol. Yea screw egypt, caverns, aztec and those levels. I tried playing them at one point but I was always terrible at them and didn't want to put forth the effort.

Also, what is used now for the rankings? Geocities went down a long time ago if I recall.
