The Elite Quarterly Podcast - Brainstorming Thread
« on: March 16, 2018, 12:27:16 am »
Oi mates,

It's the middle of March, and so, the end of March is fast approaching.  And with the end of March, that also means the end of the first three months of 2018.

I've had it in mind now to carry on "the-elite podcast" type thing, and do it every three months, which seems to be a good regularity for such an event.  Jimbo did a great job with these before, but obviously it was difficult to maintain continuously and consistency over time. I'm hoping doing these once every 3 months will give just enough content that we can dig into some of the up & comers as well as the great WRs of the period, but without doing them "too frequently" and oversaturating the content.

So I'm just looking for suggestions on format, company, co-hosts, a few others things... feel free to suggest any:

- should I do it in format like SpeedLore? Powerpoint like Jimbo? Some other format?

- I'd like to have guests... would anyone want to come on, perhaps as a co-host, perhaps as a "call in" type radio show...?  Could I reliably call eliters whose PBs & WRs I am showing, to hang out and chat about their time for 5 minutes?

- should I really call it "The Elite Quarterly?"  "The Elite Podcast?" "Rival One" as homage to my appearance on Nirvanna The Band The Show...?

With fewer streams lately, and instead more of this kind of produced content, I may even consider streaming earlier hours, if that will facilitate some call ins.  I'm almost thinking of doing it like a mashup between Lore format, and a talk radio format where I take calls from people and we chat about thing that came up over the timespan.  Imagine getting a call from Flicker to talk about an LTK record or two, then Haydos to discuss his insane PRing lately, then Grav calls in to talk about the Ace situation and the new code of conduct being implemented.  This all might be hard to coordinate, but it'd be really cool.

Anyways, feel free to chime in with any thoughts or ideas... I don't really have a complete vision for this yet, so I'm all ears.

Also if anyone is mega bored and feels like designing some banners, screens, graphics, etc for this, that'd be really awesome as well.

Stay true,

Goose

The Elite Podcast -- then you don't have to rename it if/when you change the frequency

You're good enough at running a live show to just prepare your game clips and major talking points beforehand and roll with it.

Easier to get a guest to talk about a specific topic for a few minutes than to keep one on the air for the full duration.  For example, if you can get the guy who just made a cool record to come on for 5, 10, 15 minutes to talk about their strategy or whatever.

Would definitely prefer if you arranged it more based on your and/or guest schedule than "get all the viewers to watch it live" -- only worry about scheduling timing for yourself and the 1, 2, however many special guests. Then announce the time when you know it so some people can watch live, but it doesn't have to be the "perfect time" where everyone can tune in.  The recorded version has more lasting value.

Man I'd guest host or help in a millisecond, just never felt good enough as main host.

For the 5 minute commentary on runs that you may be talking about, I think it would be a good idea to get commentary/call various people for this, but from a production standpoint these should be pre-recorded. But for a general format, I also think it would be interesting to have a guest on for the full time, not acting as co-host but rather just a conversation and getting to know them, how they got into speed running, have they run other games, etc.

I would start with the intro of the guest, talk and get to know them, general talk about not necessarily just GE, and then move on to the segments. The normal segments of the podcast could be recent goldeneye WRs or great runs, news in speedrunning in general, even interesting news outside of speedrunning, and you and the guest discuss those.

Great ideas Goose

Just giving my opinion on the matter, I firmly believe that what makes a podcast good are the people in it. The content is merely the "reason" to make it. but for it to be a success in the long run, you will have to find individuals who are entertaining/ interesting/ controversial enough that people want to keep coming back to the podcast.

Good luck finding the right concept and people for this. If you ever need any tips audio wise (live or post production) you know where to find me!

Sounds like a lot of fun, I think most of us could do live call ins no problem and maybe some busier eliters could arrange a pre-recorded thing talking to you. But the more things done live, the better imo.
Get inspired or get retired.

You're right actually, I was thinking the podcast would itself be live because most of the ones I listen to are. But it probably wouldn't be, so he could cut up the calls after the fact if needed. I just think organizing people calling in and timing it all live would be chaos.

Hope this is still in the works (if it isn't already).

Would be cool if Doak could appear on the podcast even once.  Really enjoy listening to Goose/Doak interview and I feel like Doak could offer more insight.  Others from the dev team too if possible.  Maybe some of the knowledgeable guys over at Sh00tersF0rever even though they're more on the modding/hacking side of the game.
