Suggestions for a new guy on the block
« on: May 06, 2018, 06:14:42 pm »
i recently acquired an N64 NTSC-U(NUS-001 i believe) console and a legit Goldeneye 007 Cartridge, both in seemingly decent condition. ive done sort of a test run(dont have a capture card atm) and achieved a solid 1:00 on Dam Agent, as far as setup goes id like to stream some N64 madness as well as other Retro stuff (PC, PS1) so the first thing id like to ask is, what capture card is best for $ vs Quality, and is an HDMI Converter considered cheating in anyway? im not too worried about strats for GE just yet, more or lest i think my hardware might need a bit of refurbishing.

in regards to the capture cards mentioned, will they produce decent quality across the board? im going to be running the PS1 games on PS3 hardware so i need something with an HDMI port alongside either Composite or RCA.   EDIT: should mention that i dont have a CRT TV and i dont think i'll be purchasing one due to i dont have space to put it anywhere :(

I've used GVUSB in particular for mainly goldeneye, but I've used it to capture vhs footage and a bit of other games and it has given me great quality for everything. However, I do have CRT, I'm not sure how it would work on LCD.

HDMI upscalers are not prohibited in any way, I played on an LCD for about two months and got good times (Dam 53 and Runway 22), but if you want to get serious about it I very much suggest getting a CRT. Space isn't even an issue because you can get really small CRTs for cheap these days.

just got my HDMI Upscaler today. it works ok, i guess. doesnt really work with my monitor but on my 4K Tv it gives SOME improvement. as for the Space concern, i live in a camper lol my room is the size of a small bathroom just about. i could buy a CRT and use GVUsb but actually setting everything up might be odd. i think ill have to find some alternative and make sacrifices by buying an Elgato HD Capture card, hopefully it will work either with or without the upscaler, but thanks for the suggestions guys. is there any tips you guys can give in regards to maintaining and/or "upgrading" the quality of my N64 Hardware? my controller's thumbstick jiggles a bit.

edit: elgato out of the question for now.

The best option if you don't have the space for a legit CRT setup is probably this;
Get an EasyCAP ($10ish) or other similar card with both composite and S-video in as well as an n64 AV cable with composite AND S-video out. Now you can hook the composite up to your TV and the S-Video to your card. Did this for a while when my CRT broke. It's not ideal but it will work and can be had for about $15-$20 USD.

you should still be able to have enough space, I use a 13 or 14 inch one and you should be able to fit some space for that, you could store it under your chair

    alright ill take a look at it. i found that most of the elgato setups on youtube require like a USB insert for the HDMI Converter which mine does not have.

i would put it where the 20 inch is, but it can't be that bad of space since I can fit my small 13-14 inch on my desk right next to my laptop

ah central NY, I'm in long island
