Great Moments In Chat History
« on: March 02, 2006, 10:52:00 pm »
Today featured one of the greatest moments in Chat in quite some time, as we had a frank discussion on the future of film and gaming technology.

BloodE of Sorrow (12:59:51 PM):
From: Bile Hazard | Posted: 3/2/2006 6:52:36 PM | Message DetailWait for blu-ray or a PS3. Backwards compatible with DVD anyways
BloodE of Sorrow (12:59:57 PM): Blu-ray won't take over DVDs
BloodE of Sorrow (1:00:10 PM): Blu-ray prices are 40 for some 30 for others
BloodE of Sorrow (1:00:21 PM): and PS3 is 700 dollars estimated, 900 manufacturing
Im Ngamer (1:05:12 PM): Blood, is Blu Ray supposed to display a higher quality picture?
Im Ngamer (1:05:17 PM): than DVD can
BloodE of Sorrow (1:05:29 PM): I...think it might
BloodE of Sorrow (1:05:38 PM): but it won't be that much difference as DVD was to video
BloodE of Sorrow (1:05:50 PM): the only thing i recall is blu ray holds like 18 gigs
BloodE of Sorrow (1:07:09 PM): basically people aren't gonna pay 30-40 for titles they can get for 5-10 on dvd
BloodE of Sorrow (1:07:16 PM): especially hwen the player is gonna cost them extra too
Im Ngamer (1:07:26 PM): I suppose it can be higher quality because the video is less compressed
Im Ngamer (1:07:34 PM): since you'll have more space
BloodE of Sorrow (1:07:38 PM): yeah but you won't notice as much difference
BloodE of Sorrow (1:07:44 PM): as like DVD was to video
BloodE of Sorrow (1:07:49 PM): it hardly seems worth the price
Im Ngamer (1:07:52 PM): yeah, probably will hardly notice anything
Im Ngamer (1:08:17 PM): I think the next revolution in video will be to flash-memory
Im Ngamer (1:08:24 PM): like memory sticks
BloodE of Sorrow (1:08:27 PM): DVD will survive for a while though
Im Ngamer (1:08:35 PM): because
BloodE of Sorrow (1:08:45 PM): because people have settled down to it and have collecitons built up and stuff
Im Ngamer (1:08:48 PM): 1. it can't be scratched or easily broken
Im Ngamer (1:08:59 PM): 2. it doesn't have to spin or have moving parts
BloodE of Sorrow (1:09:12 PM): they probably would want to restart their collection at a higher cost and buy a new player when they could just stick with dvd
Im Ngamer (1:09:18 PM): 3. no delay when moving around on the disk, like from chapter to chapter
Im Ngamer (1:09:41 PM): 4. potential for more storage space as the technology advances
Im Ngamer (1:10:06 PM): 5. this would mean the end of "4 DVD packages"
Im Ngamer (1:10:15 PM): like LotR and the like
BloodE of Sorrow (1:10:22 PM): but 1. Easy to lose 2. Not much storage, unless it's advanced - in that case it'll cost alot 3. Wouldn't look nice on a shelf
Im Ngamer (1:10:27 PM): so I can see some advantages there
Im Ngamer (1:10:48 PM): it could have a ton more storage Blood
BloodE of Sorrow (1:10:53 PM): yeah but you know how like ipod nano is tiny stuff and costs mcuhos
Im Ngamer (1:11:01 PM): yeah
Im Ngamer (1:11:10 PM): but I still think that's the future
BloodE of Sorrow (1:11:15 PM): I don't
Im Ngamer (1:11:22 PM): Blu Ray has none of those advantages
Im Ngamer (1:11:34 PM): what do you think will take over for DVD then?
Im Ngamer (1:11:43 PM): we're talking 10 years down the line here

On Virtual Reality, or CYOA

BloodE of Sorrow (1:11:59 PM): virtual reality
Im Ngamer (1:13:14 PM): VR movies?  well that's a thought
Im Ngamer (1:13:21 PM): they would be more like video games than movies though
BloodE of Sorrow (1:13:25 PM): that'd be totally awesome
Im Ngamer (1:13:53 PM): you want to be in Godfather Part II?
Im Ngamer (1:14:46 PM): maybe you could take part in a gunfight in an action movie
Im Ngamer (1:14:52 PM): and based on the result
Im Ngamer (1:14:56 PM): the storyline changes
Im Ngamer (1:15:04 PM): depending who you shot
BloodE of Sorrow (1:15:07 PM): yeah
BloodE of Sorrow (1:15:12 PM): like you could shoot the president
BloodE of Sorrow (1:15:19 PM): or you could shoot a cat
BloodE of Sorrow (1:15:40 PM): if you shoot the cat, then it'll be a retarded sci-fi movie about cats getting revenge
GoldenGreg007 (1:15:45 PM): hahaha
BloodE of Sorrow (1:16:13 PM): if you shoot the president it'll be an epic movie that shows the history of the presidents life
Im Ngamer (1:16:22 PM): in that case movies would only have to be 30 minutes long
GoldenGreg007 (1:16:27 PM): haha
Im Ngamer (1:16:29 PM): because it's never the same movies twice
Im Ngamer (1:16:41 PM): depending on what options you take
GoldenGreg007 (1:16:49 PM): good concept
Im Ngamer (1:16:54 PM): you would have to watch it at least a half dozen times
Im Ngamer (1:17:17 PM): I think it would be a good concept for computer generated "movies"
Im Ngamer (1:17:23 PM): like the Final Fantasy films
BloodE of Sorrow (1:17:54 PM): myeh but like, in the future they'll be like photo realistic
BloodE of Sorrow (1:18:06 PM): jon i'm just listing outcomes frm a gunfight
Im Ngamer (1:18:25 PM): Final Fantasy movies, you mean?  yeah, I know
Im Ngamer (1:18:28 PM): so it seems a good fit
BloodE of Sorrow (1:18:44 PM): it'd be totally awesome doinga VR western
Im Ngamer (1:18:48 PM): you would only have to have the voice actors talk more
BloodE of Sorrow (1:18:54 PM): you could do the end of tgtbatu
BloodE of Sorrow (1:19:00 PM): and you get to decide who you shoot
Im Ngamer (1:19:11 PM): yes
BloodE of Sorrow (1:19:15 PM): unless you were tuco
Im Ngamer (1:19:25 PM): I see good potential here
BloodE of Sorrow (1:19:45 PM): then again you'd have the great ability to have a go at clint for unloading your gun
BloodE of Sorrow (1:19:50 PM): unless he shoots you

Movie Format: What Next After DVD?

Im Ngamer (1:49:24 PM): so VR is a fine idea from a CYOA standpoint
Im Ngamer (1:49:38 PM): but that doesn't settle the issue of a VR format
Im Ngamer (1:50:04 PM): being disk-based seems like a poor choice for the future no matter how you slice it
Im Ngamer (1:50:22 PM): I think everything is going to be built on its own tiny "hard drive"
Im Ngamer (1:50:31 PM): as iPods are already pointing to
Im Ngamer (1:50:52 PM): in fact, maybe the nano has the right idea already, for the future
BloodE of Sorrow (1:51:01 PM): but its expensive
Im Ngamer (1:51:06 PM): you log in to a website and pay a small fee to download a movie
Im Ngamer (1:51:18 PM): the movie is saved to your device
Im Ngamer (1:51:36 PM): call it a nano or whatever you want, but it's something portable you can attach to a computer
Im Ngamer (1:51:41 PM): that's all that matters
Im Ngamer (1:51:51 PM): then you attach that device to your television
Im Ngamer (1:52:05 PM): or "nano player" or whatever, that's connected to the TV
Im Ngamer (1:52:15 PM): and you get DVD+ quality video and sound
Im Ngamer (1:53:17 PM): then again, it shouldn't even need a USB-type connection to either device
Im Ngamer (1:53:23 PM): everything can be done wirelessly
Im Ngamer (1:53:37 PM): the PSP and DS are already pointing in that direction
Im Ngamer (1:54:11 PM): ...yes... so the "MP3 player" will become an "avi player"
Im Ngamer (1:54:23 PM): all we really need are larger hard drives
Im Ngamer (1:54:32 PM): and we're already heading that direction
Im Ngamer (1:54:55 PM): then anyone in the world will be able to watch movies just like QB does
Im Ngamer (1:54:58 PM): except
Im Ngamer (1:55:01 PM): 1. legally
Im Ngamer (1:55:15 PM): 2. on a large screen TV, with your surround sound
Im Ngamer (1:55:23 PM): instead of just on the computer monitor
Im Ngamer (1:55:41 PM): but the availability, the time it takes to download, the HD space it takes up
Im Ngamer (1:55:47 PM): will all be just as QB has it now
Im Ngamer (1:55:58 PM): there's your future of film
Im Ngamer (1:56:25 PM): future of video games too, I'd wager
Im Ngamer (1:56:36 PM): Half-Life 2 has already set the standard
Im Ngamer (1:56:51 PM): allowing you to download an entire 6GB game online through Steam
Im Ngamer (1:57:13 PM): saving Valve thousands of dollars in packaging and shipping CDs to stores
Im Ngamer (1:57:45 PM): and with storage space and bandwidth costs falling and falling...
Im Ngamer (1:57:55 PM): yes, that's how it's going to happen
NathanStinson (1:57:55 PM): i cxan see it now...
Im Ngamer (1:58:23 PM): think about it Nate, we're almost there already
Im Ngamer (1:58:36 PM): game systems are online, and have their own hard drives
Im Ngamer (1:58:50 PM): so everything next gen is going to have all this downloadable content
Im Ngamer (1:59:00 PM): as many 360 games already do
Im Ngamer (1:59:12 PM): the next step is to make ALL of the content downloadable
Im Ngamer (1:59:23 PM): look, the Revolution is already going to be doing it
Im Ngamer (1:59:33 PM): for $2 you can buy Super Metroid
Im Ngamer (1:59:40 PM): not "content", the entire game
Im Ngamer (2:00:19 PM): without Nintendo spending a red cent on packaging, creating cartridges, shipping
Im Ngamer (2:02:05 PM): of course, this is death for someone like Darren
Im Ngamer (2:02:15 PM): what does he do without anything to "collect"?
Im Ngamer (2:02:46 PM): it's hard to show off that you have 531 GB of "rare" games on your HD
Im Ngamer (2:02:56 PM): in fact, there won't be such a thing as a "rare" game
Im Ngamer (2:03:11 PM): there won't be able problem with importing titles either
Im Ngamer (2:04:10 PM): no standing in line because you're worried the store will sell out of the next big game
Im Ngamer (2:04:53 PM): this is heady stuff
GoldenGreg007 (2:05:09 PM): that's why i'm not typing much
Im Ngamer (2:06:55 PM): I don't think it can be resisted
Im Ngamer (2:07:05 PM): I'm sure the Darrens of the world will try
Im Ngamer (2:07:13 PM): but they can't hold out for long
Im Ngamer (2:07:22 PM): it just doesn't make business sense
Im Ngamer (2:07:45 PM): to be shipping around all that raw material, when you can send the same product for 1/100000 the cost
Im Ngamer (2:07:54 PM): over the internet

Why e-books have failed

Im Ngamer (2:08:10 PM): now then, I realize that the same case has been made for books
Im Ngamer (2:08:18 PM): and yet e-books have never taken off
Im Ngamer (2:08:32 PM): but I would argue that's just the medium
CieloAzor (2:08:39 PM): Yeah, I don't like e-books.
Im Ngamer (2:08:45 PM): people don't want to look at a monitor for 20 hours to read a book
CieloAzor (2:08:53 PM): I buy books when I could easily read them for free.
Im Ngamer (2:08:55 PM): but a movie, or a game?  they're already watching the screen
Im Ngamer (2:09:10 PM): so it's not a shift at all
CieloAzor (2:12:51 PM): Yeah, I don't like e-books.
CieloAzor (2:12:53 PM): But I don't know why.
Im Ngamer (2:13:02 PM): I know why
CieloAzor (2:13:08 PM): You know what it is...
Im Ngamer (2:13:10 PM): because we read books to get off the computer
CieloAzor (2:13:13 PM): I don't want to keep scrolling to read.
Im Ngamer (2:13:19 PM): to let our eyes relax
CieloAzor (2:13:25 PM): If I had a printer, maybe I'd print them out and read.
Im Ngamer (2:13:38 PM): I wouldn't; ink is expensive
NathanStinson (2:13:43 PM): ya
CieloAzor (2:13:43 PM): Of course that would take up my paper and ink, yeah.
Im Ngamer (2:13:45 PM): the companies make a killing on that
Im Ngamer (2:14:00 PM): so I'd rather pay $10 for the paperback
CieloAzor (2:14:16 PM): Well that's what it is. The scrolling.
Im Ngamer (2:14:51 PM): I'm sure there are e-book viewers that format to one page at a time
Im Ngamer (2:15:00 PM): but I still think you wouldn't like it after a while
Im Ngamer (2:15:06 PM): your eyes need a rest
CieloAzor (2:15:08 PM): Having to click "next page" sucks too.
Im Ngamer (2:15:23 PM): well then... there's no helping you
Im Ngamer (2:16:22 PM): maybe at 4pt font
Im Ngamer (2:16:22 PM): with three monitors stacked on top of each other
Im Ngamer (2:16:47 PM): and a barbershop stool to move up and down reading off them

In Summary

Regular Civilian (2:19:32 PM): bah, too much reading
NathanStinson (2:19:48 PM): summarize for him jon
CieloAzor (2:20:36 PM): So I saw March of the Penguins last night...
CieloAzor (2:20:40 PM): And Capote this morning.
CieloAzor (2:20:48 PM): And then half of Wallace & Gromit.
Im Ngamer (2:20:48 PM): in summary, technology is moving away from disks and machines like DVD players, anything with moving parts
Im Ngamer (2:21:09 PM): and toward hard drive-like technology, like iPods and their imitators
Im Ngamer (2:21:26 PM): it's almost moving toward wireless access with all this technology
NathanStinson (2:21:26 PM): you just downloading movies, qb?
NathanStinson (2:21:31 PM): or actually watching dvd's?
Regular Civilian (2:21:35 PM): Yeah, that sounds about right
CieloAzor (2:21:39 PM): Shhhh, I might be doing either, Nate.
Im Ngamer (2:21:49 PM): downloading... for crap's sake Nate
Im Ngamer (2:21:51 PM): he was the basis of my entire argument
Im Ngamer (2:21:59 PM): about downloading all our content
CieloAzor (2:22:06 PM): But most of these are movies I never would've bought in the first place.
Im Ngamer (2:22:22 PM): and you delete them after a viewing, right QB?
CieloAzor (2:22:25 PM): Yes.
Im Ngamer (2:22:51 PM): see?  this is what I'm talking about
Regular Civilian (2:22:57 PM): So... how long before we can download food?
NathanStinson (2:23:00 PM): thats the right thing to do
Im Ngamer (2:23:03 PM): QB has no restrictions on what he watches
NathanStinson (2:23:06 PM): how do you download so freaking fast?
CieloAzor (2:23:15 PM): Cable modem?
NathanStinson (2:23:26 PM): it goes that fast?
CieloAzor (2:23:33 PM): They usually take 2-4 hours I guess.
NathanStinson (2:23:38 PM): just get them from torrent that fast?
NathanStinson (2:23:40 PM): wow
Im Ngamer (2:23:40 PM): that's the wave of the future Nate, the sizes of this media no longer matters
BloodE of Sorrow (2:23:40 PM): QB do you use torrents?
CieloAzor (2:23:41 PM): But you can do more than one at a time.
CieloAzor (2:23:52 PM): Yeah Blood.
NathanStinson (2:23:54 PM): torrents NEVER go very fast for me
NathanStinson (2:23:57 PM): and I have a cavle modem
Im Ngamer (2:24:07 PM): like I said, broadband access is cheap and getting cheaper
Im Ngamer (2:24:12 PM): as is the hosting of these files
CieloAzor (2:24:22 PM): I once got a full movie in like 5 minutes.
CieloAzor (2:24:25 PM): It blew my mind.
Im Ngamer (2:24:29 PM): as is the space to store them
BloodE of Sorrow (2:24:29 PM): :-o wowzas
CieloAzor (2:24:31 PM): It was good quality and everything.
Im Ngamer (2:25:03 PM): all we need is for someone to capitalize on the idea QB is already using
Im Ngamer (2:25:13 PM): but to offer a legal service
Im Ngamer (2:25:21 PM): and they'll be set for life
Im Ngamer (2:25:25 PM): wait, no, not yet
Im Ngamer (2:25:57 PM): first we need to get the DVD quality video to the HDTV
Im Ngamer (2:26:01 PM): but THEN

On Regions

holycatholique (2:28:30 PM): My DVD player broke!! :(
holycatholique (2:28:42 PM): can't read any discs anymore
Im Ngamer (2:28:44 PM): services like Netflicks and Blockbuster online are already leading in that direction
holycatholique (2:28:58 PM): and it makes scary high pitched noises when it tried to read discs
Im Ngamer (2:29:01 PM): but they're limited by the postal system, and by the availability of disk
Im Ngamer (2:29:09 PM): and by DVD "regions"
BloodE of Sorrow (2:29:19 PM): nobody cares about regions anymore
Im Ngamer (2:29:45 PM): good DVD players now can play any region, Blood?
BloodE of Sorrow (2:30:03 PM): most DVD players are multi region now
BloodE of Sorrow (2:30:28 PM): I got a dvdp layer for 40 quid which is multi region
Im Ngamer (2:30:40 PM): ok, "most," but if you're Netflicks you can't just assume
BloodE of Sorrow (2:30:44 PM): it came with like component cables but I'm using it with a crappy TV on a scart
Im Ngamer (2:30:53 PM): all your customers will have the latest technology
Im Ngamer (2:31:41 PM): so when I order three Japanese films, but none of them play on my regioned DVD player
Im Ngamer (2:31:49 PM): I'm upset, and that's a limitation
Im Ngamer (2:31:55 PM): another that QB doesn't have to deal with
BloodE of Sorrow (2:32:01 PM): why would you have a regioned dvd player?
BloodE of Sorrow (2:32:10 PM): when you can get a prefectly fine multi reigon
BloodE of Sorrow (2:32:18 PM): do they evne sell regioned players anymore?
BloodE of Sorrow (2:32:35 PM): and why would you buy other region dvds when you have a crappy player
Im Ngamer (2:32:36 PM): this isn't me we're talking about!  this is the entire Netflicks population
Im Ngamer (2:32:45 PM): and I'm not buying them!
BloodE of Sorrow (2:32:51 PM): Im Ngamer (20:31:20): so when I order three Japanese films, but none of them play on my regioned DVD player
Im Ngamer (2:32:52 PM): I'm renting them from Netflicks
Im Ngamer (2:32:55 PM): ORDER
Im Ngamer (2:32:59 PM): from Netflicks
BloodE of Sorrow (2:33:17 PM): made a mistake there jon

On BloodE

Im Ngamer (2:33:22 PM): you have to be able to follow an argument in order to point out its flaws, Blood
Im Ngamer (2:33:37 PM): you can't pay half-attention, then spout points at random

Another great Chat moment, as I gave an update on the old "Poster Situation" here in the room!

Im Ngamer (1:50:38 PM): alright, well remember how many posters we had in this room?
Im Ngamer (1:50:41 PM): thanks to my roommate
Blueline Goddess (1:50:44 PM): oh yes.
Im Ngamer (1:51:03 PM): well, he took all but 2 of them down
Im Ngamer (1:51:06 PM): wait, 3
Im Ngamer (1:51:19 PM): because he wants to be seeing this new girl, who "would not approve"
Im Ngamer (1:51:20 PM): imagine that!
Blueline Goddess (1:51:31 PM): but what about the Peter Meter?
Im Ngamer (1:51:36 PM): um...
Im Ngamer (1:51:54 PM): still there, but hidden behind a bunch of pencils right now
Blueline Goddess (1:52:12 PM): hehe
Im Ngamer (1:52:17 PM): but anyways, you can imagine how much stick tack it took
Im Ngamer (1:52:24 PM): to keep all those posters hung
Blueline Goddess (1:52:47 PM): indeed.
Im Ngamer (1:52:47 PM): well, he put all the stick tack together into one huge ball
Im Ngamer (1:53:05 PM): and stuck that ball to his desk, so it's just hanging there
Blueline Goddess (1:53:11 PM): nice.
Im Ngamer (1:53:27 PM): like, above his head if he reads at the desk, you get the idea
Im Ngamer (1:54:06 PM): and since it's sticky tack, you can kind of mold it
Im Ngamer (1:54:14 PM): like putty, you know?
Blueline Goddess (1:54:35 PM): are you feeling artistic, Jon?  ;)
Im Ngamer (1:54:40 PM): no, not me!
Im Ngamer (1:54:48 PM): haven't touched it, but he has
Im Ngamer (1:54:55 PM): this is how it currently looks:
Im Ngamer (1:54:57 PM):

OllEbOllE 0 0 7 (1:55:27 PM): is that a replica of his penis?
Blueline Goddess (1:55:28 PM): we're gonna need a bigger boat!
Im Ngamer (1:56:12 PM): just the thing you'd want hanging over your head as you study, eh?
OllEbOllE 0 0 7 (1:56:19 PM): true
BloodE of Sorrow (1:56:38 PM): eugh
BloodE of Sorrow (1:56:40 PM): its brown and blue!

The sticky tack could only be offensive if your mind was in the gutter to start with.  Clearly, the problem here is with you.

A Black Day for Chat, complete with tasteless BloodE black humor!  bold for the tasteless.

Im Ngamer (1:52:42 PM): man, it has been a rough year for our student body
Im Ngamer (1:53:14 PM): there are only about 2,000 students here on campus, and three of us have already died just this semester!
Im Ngamer (1:55:02 PM): we just found out that two senior girls died in a car accident last night
J Eternia F (1:55:24 PM): god
J Eternia F (1:55:29 PM): drunk driving?
Im Ngamer (1:55:29 PM): and worse yet, it was a single-car accident
J Eternia F (1:55:32 PM): speeding?
Im Ngamer (1:55:41 PM): so we can only assume it was drunk driving
Im Ngamer (1:55:56 PM): even if it wasn't, it's what everyone will think
Im Ngamer (1:56:03 PM): but I figure it probably was
J Eternia F (1:56:45 PM): well Jon. you dont need to be drunk to get into an accident ;)
Im Ngamer (1:57:13 PM): yeah, but a big enough accident to kill both people?  when you only hit a tree or something?
Im Ngamer (1:57:28 PM): had to be speeding in bad conditions otherwise
Im Ngamer (1:57:36 PM): and the conditions weren't bad at all yesterday
BloodE of Sorrow (1:57:44 PM): and one of his classmates got murdered
J Eternia F (1:58:31 PM): dont need bad conditions for a girl to hit a tree ;)
J Eternia F (1:58:36 PM): what was the car?
BloodE of Sorrow (1:58:48 PM): bad taste djie
BloodE of Sorrow (1:58:50 PM): bad taste
J Eternia F (1:58:53 PM): haha
CieloAzor (1:58:55 PM): heh
J Eternia F (1:59:02 PM): not really
Im Ngamer (1:59:30 PM): not sure what the car was
Im Ngamer (1:59:44 PM): but they said it happened up North aways, not in the city
J Eternia F (1:59:50 PM): ok
Im Ngamer (1:59:53 PM): so I figure they went off the road and hit a tree
J Eternia F (1:59:58 PM): very possible
J Eternia F (2:00:04 PM): or a couple of barrels
Im Ngamer (2:01:20 PM): I'm going to facebook these two girls now
Im Ngamer (2:02:34 PM): see if I recognize the faces
Im Ngamer (2:06:22 PM): it's amazing how fast word gets around
Im Ngamer (2:06:29 PM): there have already been...
Im Ngamer (2:07:05 PM): 16 messages on her wall
Im Ngamer (2:07:20 PM): "keep smiling in heaven" and all that
BloodE of Sorrow (2:07:26 PM): <_<
Im Ngamer (2:11:22 PM): here is one of the girls, on the bottom
Im Ngamer (2:11:23 PM): photos-282.facebook.com/n...2_8004.jpg
Im Ngamer (2:11:41 PM): I know the name, but don't know where I knew her from
Im Ngamer (2:11:50 PM): oh!  I think I fixed her computer once this year
BloodE of Sorrow (2:11:58 PM): <_<
BloodE of Sorrow (2:12:20 PM): again
Im Ngamer (2:12:30 PM): looking it up now
BloodE of Sorrow (2:12:30 PM): That sounds sort of...in bad taste.
Im Ngamer (2:14:43 PM): yup!  I fixed her PC in August
Im Ngamer (2:14:54 PM): that last thing I ever said to her was...
Im Ngamer (2:15:05 PM): The best advice I can give you, Leslie, is to STOP using Internet Explorer.
Im Ngamer (2:15:47 PM): if only I'd mentioned seatbelts!
Im Ngamer (2:16:34 PM): but yeah, her laptop was a real mess
Im Ngamer (2:16:46 PM): Ad Aware had to fix over 650 problems
Im Ngamer (2:17:07 PM): and she had been in to have it cleaned only the semester before
Im Ngamer (2:17:41 PM): so clearly was taking as many risks on the Information Superhighway as the offline version
BloodE of Sorrow (2:19:08 PM): Im Ngamer (20:15:20): if only I'd mentioned seatbelts! - again in bad taste
Im Ngamer (2:19:19 PM): keep reading Blood
BloodE of Sorrow (2:19:38 PM): the heck ya mean?
Im Ngamer (2:20:09 PM): the Highway thing should be pointed out as offensive as well
Im Ngamer (2:20:17 PM): just so everyone catches that
BloodE of Sorrow (2:20:20 PM): Im Ngamer (20:17:13): so clearly was taking as many risks on the Information Superhighway as the offline version - dear lord
Im Ngamer (2:20:26 PM): ha!  nice
BloodE of Sorrow (2:20:32 PM): so unlike you jon
Im Ngamer (2:20:37 PM): anyways, wow!  the other girl was even more popular
Im Ngamer (2:20:43 PM): 23 messages for her
BloodE of Sorrow (2:20:52 PM): in what space of time?
Im Ngamer (2:21:10 PM): I think it's been about 16 hours since the accident
Im Ngamer (2:22:52 PM): oh, here we go
Im Ngamer (2:23:16 PM): this is both of the girls, with their dog
Im Ngamer (2:23:18 PM): photos-922.facebook.com/n...2_1142.jpg
BloodE of Sorrow (2:23:36 PM): I'm waiting for you to make another terribly distasteful joke
Im Ngamer (2:23:37 PM): the girl with the laptop is on the left
Im Ngamer (2:23:58 PM): sorry Blood, I only do the world's most surprising thing
Im Ngamer (2:24:03 PM): now that you expect it, I can't
BloodE of Sorrow (2:24:09 PM): hmmm
Im Ngamer (2:24:12 PM): I'm weird like that
BloodE of Sorrow (2:24:18 PM): I can't think of any possible way to make a distasteful joke
BloodE of Sorrow (2:24:21 PM): la la la
BloodE of Sorrow (2:27:11 PM): oh fine
BloodE of Sorrow (2:27:17 PM): Which one is the dog?
Im Ngamer (2:27:29 PM): ouch!
Im Ngamer (2:27:36 PM): what poor taste!

Phil wants this saved for all time!

VGKingOfKings (7:13:52 PM): the elite.net - i apologise for whining for the past 5 years about pal/ntsc/combined pd rankings, while i have the best pal only times in the game, i realise my ranking of 12 / 10 is accurate to this day and accept that

He did yeah... But I believe that Phil hasn't all times up to date, so who knows.

It'd be great though if YE could finally update the PAL rankings?!!

This topic's home is in FFA, but it will be pushed back to General whenever something particularly interesting happens.

EDIT - Oh yes, which means that standard GC-level spam protection applies.

A crazy moment as we were tallying Ngamers!

YourElitenessPD (2:25:09 AM): ok, I've got 21 Ngamers total
YourElitenessPD (2:26:23 AM): What we need is all 21 names in the chat at once
YourElitenessPD (2:26:28 AM): That would make FV pure hell
YourElitenessPD (2:26:47 AM): p075.ezboard.com/fperfect...4549.topic
YourElitenessPD (2:26:53 AM): ^^ List of names
Blueline Goddess (2:27:35 AM): except, as pointed out by someone, you put your names in the list of names you didn't own.
YourElitenessPD (2:27:48 AM): No I didn't
YourElitenessPD (2:27:55 AM): And I'm talking about other post
YourElitenessPD (2:27:58 AM): I just made one
Blueline Goddess (2:28:08 AM): well, in the first post.
Blueline Goddess (2:28:30 AM): of yours.
Regular Civilian (2:28:33 AM): hm
YourElitenessPD (2:28:39 AM): Im Ngarner - listed once
Blueline Goddess (2:28:41 AM): Im Ngarner is listed as yours and not yours.
Regular Civilian (2:28:54 AM): I think I need a copy of myself who doesn't speak English
Im Ngamer (2:28:56 AM): I think one is a I and one an L
Blueline Goddess (2:28:58 AM): oh, that's an L
Blueline Goddess (2:29:00 AM): gotcha.
Im Ngamer (2:29:01 AM): yea
YourElitenessPD (2:29:08 AM): Irn Ngarner - listed once
Blueline Goddess (2:29:16 AM): I get it now.
YourElitenessPD (2:29:27 AM): lrn Ngamer - listed once
Im Ngamer (2:29:29 AM): you win YE, stop winning!
YourElitenessPD (2:29:31 AM): My post is perfectly fine
Im Ngamer (2:29:36 AM): we know, you win!
Blueline Goddess (2:29:38 AM): yeah yeah, I'm wrong, you win.
Im Ngamer (2:29:56 AM): there will be a parade at 5pm
YourElitenessPD (2:30:07 AM): Im Ngamer (5:00:00 PM): there will be a parade at 5pm
YourElitenessPD (2:30:12 AM): Coincidence?
Blueline Goddess (2:30:14 AM): ironic'd
Regular Civilian (2:30:22 AM): holy crap'd
Blueline Goddess (2:30:35 AM): Jon has to be god.
Im Ngamer (2:30:39 AM): wow!
Blueline Goddess (2:30:41 AM): there's no other explanation.
Im Ngamer (2:30:46 AM): I even amaze myself
YourElitenessPD (2:30:54 AM): That was incredible

This could spawn discussion!

Im Ngamer (1:43:40 PM): Garrett Sellati VS Illu
Stickmansam 1024 (1:43:49 PM): I will vote after some research
Stickmansam 1024 (1:43:50 PM): and also
Stickmansam 1024 (1:43:52 PM): washing up
Im Ngamer (3:01:27 PM): how big is your face?
Im Ngamer (3:01:37 PM): I've seen battleships hosed down quicker!
Stickmansam 1024 (3:01:43 PM): dishes!
Stickmansam 1024 (3:01:49 PM): washing up means dishes in the UK!
Stickmansam 1024 (3:02:01 PM): we have lots of it!
Im Ngamer (3:02:13 PM): ahh, I only wish we'd been through this before
Stickmansam 1024 (3:09:12 PM): Holy ZARQUON
Stickmansam 1024 (3:09:17 PM): Bunker 1 TIED?!?!???!?!
Stickmansam 1024 (3:09:30 PM): That's beyond surprising
Im Ngamer (3:09:33 PM): I know!
Stickmansam 1024 (3:09:36 PM): beyond even astounding
Stickmansam 1024 (3:09:43 PM): I think it's verging on sacreligious
Stickmansam 1024 (3:09:51 PM): shoulda got it 1 day earlier, huh?
Stickmansam 1024 (3:09:57 PM): great Scott
Stickmansam 1024 (3:10:01 PM): to be honest
Stickmansam 1024 (3:10:11 PM): I think Wouter should have been allowed to keep his record
Stickmansam 1024 (3:10:34 PM): he must be heartbroken
Im Ngamer (3:10:38 PM): what next?  the still champ because we feel bad for him rankings?
Stickmansam 1024 (3:10:46 PM): no, no
Stickmansam 1024 (3:10:52 PM): I'm not saying it should be taken down
Stickmansam 1024 (3:10:55 PM): I'm just saying
Stickmansam 1024 (3:10:59 PM): this is part of the reason why I quit
Stickmansam 1024 (3:11:02 PM): (possibly)
Stickmansam 1024 (3:11:12 PM): I got 0:27 War, and then some PUNK KID beats it
Stickmansam 1024 (3:11:16 PM): by two seconds
Im Ngamer (3:11:18 PM): you can't stand change?
Im Ngamer (3:11:26 PM): you don't like the world to move ahead?
Stickmansam 1024 (3:11:28 PM): I hate having my work negated
Im Ngamer (3:11:39 PM): you hate to see improvements?
Stickmansam 1024 (3:11:42 PM): if I'd known, I wouldn't have wasted my time
Im Ngamer (3:12:01 PM): waste?!  ye gads man, think of the personal satisfaction!
Im Ngamer (3:12:07 PM): no one can take that way from you
Stickmansam 1024 (3:12:15 PM): dude, I think it's been abundantly clear since the Elite began that nobody is in this "for the world to move ahead"
Stickmansam 1024 (3:12:22 PM): it's all about personal glory
Im Ngamer (3:12:32 PM): I'm in it to move the world ahead!
Stickmansam 1024 (3:12:55 PM): possibly you alone, my friend
Stickmansam 1024 (3:13:10 PM): possibly, five years ago, you weren't alone
Stickmansam 1024 (3:13:28 PM): you were actually there setting records and strategies with the best of them and I deeply envy you for that actually
Stickmansam 1024 (3:13:53 PM): but now, unless you're in the top 0.001% in the WORLD, you don't have a chance in hell of ever pushing back ANY boundary in PD or GE
Stickmansam 1024 (3:14:06 PM): so I think the vast majority of active players must just be in it for the glory
Stickmansam 1024 (3:14:17 PM): and personal satisfaction
Stickmansam 1024 (3:14:30 PM): anyway, Wouter was thinking "I have 0:17 Bunker A - nobody will ever tie it - this is my crowning glory"
Stickmansam 1024 (3:14:38 PM): "whatever happens after this, I can die happy"
Stickmansam 1024 (3:14:49 PM): and now he's had that taken away from him, I sympathise
Stickmansam 1024 (3:15:30 PM): lol
Stickmansam 1024 (3:15:34 PM): Wouter's away message is
Stickmansam 1024 (3:15:41 PM): "I'm such a loser, I even lost my presence!"
Stickmansam 1024 (3:19:26 PM): did Mouse win yesterday, even?
Stickmansam 1024 (3:21:03 PM): no he didn't!
Stickmansam 1024 (3:21:06 PM): good heavens
Stickmansam 1024 (3:21:15 PM): he would have had it too

A discussion of the ethics of the WoW funeral raid became a debate on high-level gaming as an artform on the level of music!  Main players are Ngamer, Infil, BDG, PDO, Neo, and QB.

WoW Funeral Ethics

BlueDogGreen (12:00:57 AM): did you hear about that WoW funeral that got massacred?
CieloAzor (12:01:04 AM): Yeah, saw the vid.
Brian19King (12:01:07 AM): What?
Im Ngamer (12:01:21 AM): they were doing a funeral inside the game, PDO
Im Ngamer (12:01:26 AM): for a girl who died in real life
Brian19King (12:01:29 AM): wtf.
Im Ngamer (12:01:38 AM): that's not the bad part!
BlueDogGreen (12:01:47 AM): and then some guild attacked the funeral and just raped everyone
Im Ngamer (12:01:49 AM): they were in the middle of the sermon thing, and they got ATTACKED
Brian19King (12:01:50 AM): lol
Brian19King (12:01:52 AM): wow
Im Ngamer (12:01:53 AM): by a rival clan
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:01:57 AM): I used to call in sick to work on patch day
Im Ngamer (12:02:02 AM): and get owned and they all died
Brian19King (12:02:06 AM): Am I terrible person for laughing?
BlueDogGreen (12:02:11 AM): na
Im Ngamer (12:02:11 AM): no, lots of people did
Brian19King (12:02:12 AM): I think I'm going to hell.
Brian19King (12:02:18 AM): Link?
Im Ngamer (12:02:18 AM): but lots said it was sick too
Brian19King (12:02:23 AM): It IS sick
Brian19King (12:02:25 AM): but it's also funny.
Im Ngamer (12:02:27 AM): it's caused a big controversy
Infil12 (12:02:31 AM): did the people know what was happening when they attacked?
BlueDogGreen (12:02:32 AM): and its on google video too
BlueDogGreen (12:02:34 AM): yeah
Im Ngamer (12:02:39 AM): yes, they did
BlueDogGreen (12:02:39 AM): they wanted to @#%$ up the funeral
Infil12 (12:02:44 AM): so they intentionally destroyed the "funeral"?
BlueDogGreen (12:02:44 AM): shits and giggles
Im Ngamer (12:02:47 AM): yes
BlueDogGreen (12:02:47 AM): yep
Infil12 (12:02:47 AM): man
CieloAzor (12:02:51 AM): video.google.com/videopla...ow+funeral
Infil12 (12:02:59 AM): i'm not sure if i really want to watch that, lol
Brian19King (12:03:01 AM): watching
Im Ngamer (12:03:05 AM): well, for one thing, you could easily have not had the funeral in a battle zone
Im Ngamer (12:03:09 AM): where PvP is allowed
BlueDogGreen (12:03:15 AM): yeah
Im Ngamer (12:03:18 AM): so it was stupid of them
Infil12 (12:03:23 AM): did the funeral holders just... want to test who would attack them or something?
Infil12 (12:03:44 AM): ok, i'm succumbing, i'm clicking
Brian19King (12:03:49 AM): lol @ the song.
BlueDogGreen (12:04:06 AM): no they were actually having an in game sermon for someone who died in a car accident that was a big member of the guild, so they wanted to give all a chance to morn the character
BlueDogGreen (12:04:12 AM): i dunno some crazy @#%$
Brian19King (12:04:36 AM): that's @#%$ up.
Brian19King (12:04:37 AM): lol
Brian19King (12:04:39 AM): just wow
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:04:44 AM): shoulda done it at the SW cathedral
Infil12 (12:04:53 AM): i'm not sure what's worse, the attack, or the fact that they held an in-game funeral.
Brian19King (12:05:03 AM): Neither am I
Infil12 (12:05:24 AM): when people ask me why i don't play wow, now i know exactly what to tell them.
BlueDogGreen (12:05:29 AM): initially i thought the attack was funny
BlueDogGreen (12:05:45 AM): but after thinking about it, even we on a forum morn the loss of one of our own
BlueDogGreen (12:05:57 AM): and so I think they were fine in having the funeral
Infil12 (12:06:12 AM): i don't know. i guess it's not *all* bad.
Infil12 (12:06:18 AM): it's different posting on a forum, though...
Infil12 (12:06:26 AM): versus actually holding a ceremony, planned out, in the game.
Brian19King (12:06:33 AM): holy @#%$
Brian19King (12:06:37 AM): look how many people were there
Infil12 (12:06:39 AM): it's fine to mourn a loss, but...
Im Ngamer (12:06:48 AM): how about if we held a funeral in this Chat room and planned it out?
Im Ngamer (12:06:53 AM): would that be crossing the line?
Brian19King (12:06:56 AM): That's what I was thinking
Infil12 (12:07:01 AM): i think it would be on the same level, yes.
Brian19King (12:07:02 AM): except a topic.
Brian19King (12:07:14 AM): I tihnk the difference between a chatroom and a topic is huge tho
Infil12 (12:07:26 AM): a chatroom = you take time to show up
Infil12 (12:07:35 AM): with a forum, you can post condolences when you check it, at your convenience
Brian19King (12:07:39 AM): yeah
Infil12 (12:08:00 AM): if someone important were to die in the elite
BlueDogGreen (12:08:01 AM): honestly though, some our big members like Ngamer and whatnot... I bet we would plan something out (knock on wood jon :))
Brian19King (12:08:12 AM): lol, nice of you to name him
Im Ngamer (12:08:16 AM): oh really?  *runs in front of a bus*
Infil12 (12:08:17 AM): and then we, like, held a ceremony in here, with ngamer giving a eulogy and each person taking turns to speak memories...
Brian19King (12:08:19 AM): holy @#%$ what a cluster @#%$.
Infil12 (12:08:25 AM): i think that's pretty hardcore.
BlueDogGreen (12:09:04 AM): maybe its a little bit much for an in game ceremony, but in the long run i think it was a nice gesture for people that couldnt go to the real funeral
Brian19King (12:09:04 AM): wow, was a massacre.
BlueDogGreen (12:09:13 AM): its still showing the memory and that people care
BlueDogGreen (12:09:17 AM): just in a different way
Infil12 (12:10:35 AM): i mean, if they're going to do it... then i'm not going to stop them.
BlueDogGreen (12:10:41 AM): exactly
Infil12 (12:10:49 AM): if they feel they need to do that to capture the memory or whatnot... then fine, i guess.
Infil12 (12:10:57 AM): but i think it's a bit much, myself.
Infil12 (12:11:43 AM): the controversy this has caused just shows what the wow community is like, i think.
BlueDogGreen (12:11:56 AM): yeah
BlueDogGreen (12:12:04 AM): its a second life for many people
Infil12 (12:12:43 AM): a close RL friend of mine have this joke that we'll be the last two people alive to not play wow when the expansion comes out
Neo26988 (12:13:42 AM): I've never played WoW, not once.
Infil12 (12:13:46 AM): seriously, save your time, money, and sanity
Brian19King (12:13:51 AM): Ricky nailed it.
Brian19King (12:13:58 AM): I was like..
Brian19King (12:14:01 AM): I could PAY to play this and have no free time
Im Ngamer (12:14:02 AM): and you get a thousand hits
Brian19King (12:14:03 AM): Or.....
Brian19King (12:14:07 AM): I could buy some beer and have some fun.

WoW as a Way of Life

JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:14:06 AM): 200+ days played time :/
Infil12 (12:14:17 AM): you have 200+ days played??
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:14:23 AM): 180 on one character
Brian19King (12:14:28 AM): wtf
Infil12 (12:14:29 AM): that's insane.
Im Ngamer (12:14:32 AM): Pat's a superstar!
Brian19King (12:14:39 AM): 200 DAYS?
Brian19King (12:14:41 AM): Dude?!
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:14:44 AM): I'm in one of the top raiding guilds in the world
Brian19King (12:14:44 AM): That's like...
Infil12 (12:14:45 AM): the game has been out for how long?
Brian19King (12:14:47 AM): A year of your waking life.
Infil12 (12:14:48 AM): maybe 450 days??
Neo26988 (12:14:59 AM): Brian19King (3:14:41 PM): A year of your waking life. <--- True
Infil12 (12:15:01 AM): and that's 24-hour days, too.
Im Ngamer (12:15:02 AM): Pat, you were one of the first to L60 during Beta, mirte?
BlueDogGreen (12:15:10 AM): thats nuts
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:15:11 AM): 2nd paladin to 60
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:15:14 AM): in beta
Im Ngamer (12:15:16 AM): ok, thought so
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:15:25 AM): and 2nd paladin to 60 on alleria
Infil12 (12:15:26 AM): yeeeah.
BlueDogGreen (12:15:31 AM): 2nd? why not first?
Infil12 (12:15:39 AM): yeah, i'm with BDG
BlueDogGreen (12:15:43 AM): losers always whine about their best
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:15:49 AM): because I couldn't play 24/7 like this one guy could
Brian19King (12:16:00 AM): you played what..
Brian19King (12:16:01 AM): 23/7?
BlueDogGreen (12:16:05 AM): winners are the ones who go home and @#%$ the prom queen
Infil12 (12:16:06 AM): lol, indeed
BlueDogGreen (12:16:06 AM): :)
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:16:16 AM): I was much more efficient though, only played about 12 a day
Brian19King (12:16:23 AM): only
Infil12 (12:16:28 AM): i know you are serious
Brian19King (12:16:32 AM): You need a woman.
Infil12 (12:16:33 AM): and to wow players, that's probably not a joke
Brian19King (12:16:33 AM): Seriously.
Regular Civilian (12:16:37 AM): holy pants
Infil12 (12:16:39 AM): but... to hear "only" next to "12 hours a day"...
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:16:45 AM): who says I don't?
Im Ngamer (12:16:47 AM): didn't you get it in only like 6 days though?
Brian19King (12:16:52 AM): Me.
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:16:58 AM): you'd be wrong
Brian19King (12:17:12 AM): You want me to believe you're with a woman while playing a video game 12 hours a day?
BlueDogGreen (12:17:18 AM): i bet there is nothing for satisfying then leveling up while recieving a blow job
Im Ngamer (12:17:19 AM): Pat had a girlfriend at the time
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:17:23 AM): I don't play that much anymore
Brian19King (12:17:26 AM): lol bdg
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:17:37 AM): I only log on to raid
Regular Civilian (12:17:40 AM): I just leveled up... in more ways than one!
Im Ngamer (12:17:45 AM): heh
Infil12 (12:17:47 AM): must be hard to be optimal
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:17:55 AM): in some ways
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:18:08 AM): but playing so much was really insane
Infil12 (12:18:09 AM): (... while receiving a blow job)
Neo26988 (12:18:18 AM): You nutters.
Neo26988 (12:18:22 AM): I'll stick with RS thank you very much. XD
Neo26988 (12:19:17 AM): Haha.
Neo26988 (12:19:24 AM): This vid is ridiculous.
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:19:48 AM): and yes Jon, it took me 10 days in beta, 7.1 in retail
Brian19King (12:20:01 AM): There's something wrong when you measure days in tenths :)
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:20:37 AM): so yeah, we only raid three days a week at the moment
BlueDogGreen (12:20:46 AM): i thought WoW players didnt have a concept of time
BlueDogGreen (12:20:57 AM): it was either "time to play" or "time to think about playing"
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:22:33 AM): I probably play a tenth as much as I used to
Infil12 (12:22:38 AM): i've grown to really dislike wow, without having ever sat down and actually played it.
BlueDogGreen (12:22:46 AM): but for some people its heroin and for others its WoW
Infil12 (12:22:48 AM): though, having seen a bunch from derek and my brother.
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:22:57 AM): it's a really really good game
Neo26988 (12:22:59 AM): Neither would I, Mgay. Neither would I.
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:23:04 AM): just....too addicting
Infil12 (12:23:06 AM): no game is *that* good.
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:23:08 AM): for everyones own good
Infil12 (12:23:09 AM): i'm sorry.
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:23:10 AM): yes it is
Neo26988 (12:23:14 AM): I'm sure it's a good game.
Neo26988 (12:23:14 AM): But like.
BlueDogGreen (12:23:17 AM): i concur with infil
Neo26988 (12:23:21 AM): When it gets to the point where you can't stop playing.
Neo26988 (12:23:24 AM): You're @#%$ buddy.
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:23:26 AM): right
BlueDogGreen (12:23:29 AM): im sure its fun and all
Infil12 (12:23:32 AM): have you stopped to think all you could have done with your life in that time?
Neo26988 (12:23:33 AM): At least with PD/GE I could put 'em down no matter what.
Infil12 (12:23:36 AM): all the things that actually matter in the end?
BlueDogGreen (12:23:42 AM): but if youre cancelling plans with real friends to play... then youve crossed a line
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:23:44 AM): no regrets
BlueDogGreen (12:24:02 AM): but then again if you have no friends then its fine
BlueDogGreen (12:24:19 AM): I watched 2-3 movies a day for 6 months when I had no friends
Neo26988 (12:24:20 AM): I know someone on RS who came to a drop party (dropping money/items) instaed of going to visit his sick grand mother.
Neo26988 (12:24:22 AM): Sick = dieing
Neo26988 (12:24:37 AM): Had a big cry when he didn't get anything.
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:24:44 AM): I'm a believer in fate.  Who knows?  I could still be with Sam if it wasn't for WoW.  I would never have moved back home, never have reconnected with some of my old friends from highschool, never would have met my current gf...etc.
Infil12 (12:24:55 AM): if we actually knew lots of wow players, im' sure there'd be tons of stories like that, neo
Infil12 (12:24:57 AM): it's just sick.
Neo26988 (12:25:00 AM): Yeah.
Neo26988 (12:25:03 AM): Like WTF.
Neo26988 (12:25:12 AM): Even I have my limits, and I'm pretty bad.
Infil12 (12:25:22 AM): eventually, it just hits you
Infil12 (12:25:26 AM): "wait a minute, this is a f*cking game"
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:25:31 AM): yup
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:25:33 AM): it did
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:25:50 AM): only took 13 months
Infil12 (12:25:52 AM): in two years (or five years, or whatever), none of this will have even mattered at all.
BlueDogGreen (12:25:54 AM): but we had some GE and PD players who did that
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:25:55 AM): for me to be like wtf
Infil12 (12:25:59 AM): nothing wrong with a hobby, for fun, for relaxing
Infil12 (12:26:01 AM): but... seriously.
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:26:05 AM): that's not true infil
Infil12 (12:26:18 AM): how so?
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:26:32 AM): I still talk to my guildmates every week.  I gained some awesome friendships that aren't going to go away
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:26:37 AM): and not about wow
Infil12 (12:26:56 AM): friendships can be made, i suppose. but i think friendships can be made without excessive playing, either.
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:27:01 AM): yes
Infil12 (12:27:06 AM): there's nothing inherently wrong with playing video games as a hobby.
Infil12 (12:27:10 AM): but... 200 days?
holycatholique (12:27:15 AM): heh gg
Infil12 (12:27:17 AM): and this isn't spread out over 10 years either.
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:27:21 AM): but when you're ion a guild like I was in, everyone is playing for the same reasons
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:27:29 AM): so you're bound to share some of the same interests
Infil12 (12:27:29 AM): and what reasons are those?
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:27:44 AM): pushing content, being the first to kill the new stuff, etcv
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:27:46 AM): etc
Infil12 (12:28:01 AM): well, you're not the only one who plays it.
Infil12 (12:28:07 AM): so there must be reasons for this stuff.
Infil12 (12:28:09 AM): i don't see it, though.
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:28:23 AM): there aren't too many who played it like I did, though :/\
Infil12 (12:28:28 AM): the whole thing just screams "star trek nerd" to me.
Infil12 (12:28:37 AM): if it's not taken in moderation
Neo26988 (12:28:42 AM): It's an escape from their pathetic real lives, nothing more.
Infil12 (12:28:44 AM): (and i know very few wow people who play in moderation... if any)
Infil12 (12:28:54 AM): exactly neo.
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:28:56 AM): well, like I said, think waht you want, but I'm not ashamed or anything of playing wow for 200 days
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:29:02 AM): or think less of myself for doing so
Infil12 (12:29:07 AM): clearly
failurewarningV1 (12:29:08 AM): sz even delayed the euro fv to play wow, thats just sad
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:29:18 AM): I'm happy with who I am
Infil12 (12:29:25 AM): i'm not trying to personally attack you.
Infil12 (12:29:28 AM): don't take it that way.
failurewarningV1 (12:29:37 AM): its a generalization
Infil12 (12:29:39 AM): i just know so many people who are hooked on wow that it disgusts me, the whole concept.
Infil12 (12:29:44 AM): it pisses me right off.
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:29:45 AM): yeah
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:29:53 AM): actually, lol
Neo26988 (12:29:53 AM): Pat, you have to admit, that if you really do feel that way.
Neo26988 (12:29:58 AM): Then you're a minority.
BlueDogGreen (12:30:05 AM): hey for you its wow, i know there is plenty of @#%$ I wasted time on too
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:30:06 AM): no, I was just going to sy
failurewarningV1 (12:30:06 AM): its like smoking in a way, have to get their fix
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:30:07 AM): say*
BlueDogGreen (12:30:13 AM): i was quite the pot smoker back in the day
BlueDogGreen (12:30:22 AM): and accomplished absolutely nothing for 6 months
Infil12 (12:30:25 AM): it's an addiction, for sure.
BlueDogGreen (12:30:26 AM): let alone remembering it
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:30:33 AM): that one of our raid leaders like dropped out of school when he was ONE SEMESTER away from graduating
Infil12 (12:30:36 AM): and it's just as unhealthy.
failurewarningV1 (12:30:38 AM): then you went onto the tabacco right
Infil12 (12:30:43 AM): or, at least, *very* unhealthy.
BlueDogGreen (12:30:52 AM): no tabacco has been my one true friend for 5 or 6 years now
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:31:15 AM): but yes, I agree
Infil12 (12:31:22 AM): the friend i mentioned earlier, his friend either dropped out of school or came really close due to wow.
Im Ngamer (12:31:25 AM): I don't think you can say "no game is that good" when discussing WoW
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:31:31 AM): when my friends ask me about wow, I tell them to steer clear
Infil12 (12:31:33 AM): he didn't study for any of his finals (and this is university here, folks)
Im Ngamer (12:31:37 AM): it's not even about the game, or any Blizzard created
Im Ngamer (12:31:42 AM): it's the atmosphere
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:31:45 AM): ^^^
Infil12 (12:31:46 AM): and like i say, he punched a wall and broke his wrist when my friend refused to raid with him on finals night.
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:31:53 AM): jon hit it on the head
Infil12 (12:32:18 AM): no atmosphere is that good, then.
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:32:27 AM): it was for me
Infil12 (12:32:32 AM): nothing should get that much of any one person's time.
Im Ngamer (12:32:37 AM): but yeah, I have to stay away, because I could get hooked on something like that so easily
Infil12 (12:32:38 AM): in that short of a time frame.
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:32:38 AM): 50 people with the same common goal
Infil12 (12:32:45 AM): jon, good for you, seriously
Im Ngamer (12:32:48 AM): trying to be the first person in the world to kill some new monster
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:32:54 AM): yup
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:32:59 AM): and, it was fun
Infil12 (12:33:02 AM): derek joked to me often about making an "elite" guild
Infil12 (12:33:13 AM): and how awesome it would be because we're all skilled gamers, capable of following hard instructions
Im Ngamer (12:33:24 AM): he could have had one if he'd acted soon enough
Brian19King (12:33:24 AM): been there done that in CS
Brian19King (12:33:28 AM): everyone becomes an @#%$ :]
Infil12 (12:33:29 AM): can you imagine how much time that would require??
BlueDogGreen (12:33:29 AM): i liked the story about the group of like 500 people who killed the "unkillable" beast in everquest
Im Ngamer (12:33:45 AM): yeah, stuff like that is really cool to me
Infil12 (12:33:45 AM): the elite is already full of so many insane OCs...
Im Ngamer (12:33:55 AM): even if 'it's just a game'
Infil12 (12:33:58 AM): i can't imagine trying to be the first in the world to kill the new raid instance
Im Ngamer (12:34:00 AM): still a neat accomplishment
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:34:09 AM): also, the lore of WoW really intrigues me
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:34:22 AM): I played all of the warcraft games leading up to WoW
(12:34:30 AM) octoinky has left the room.
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:34:30 AM): so when I went through areas in beta I was like omfg
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:34:42 AM): further fueled my addiction
Im Ngamer (12:34:51 AM): oh, I didn't realize it fit into the storyline so well

What Matters 10 Years Later?

Neo26988 (12:34:54 AM): I'm still going to have to go to "In 10 years, none of this is going to matter" ideaology.
Infil12 (12:34:56 AM): the few times derek and my brother met
Neo26988 (12:35:05 AM): Seriously, go out there and cure cancer or something.
Infil12 (12:35:07 AM): they literally excluded me from the conversation nearly entirely, and just talked about wow.
Neo26988 (12:35:12 AM): Save lives, make the world a better place.
Neo26988 (12:35:17 AM): Don't lock yourself in a room and kill pixels.
Infil12 (12:35:27 AM): it was pretty infuriating. and then at the end, they jokingly said "see? doesn't all this awesome talk make you want to play wow?"
Im Ngamer (12:35:28 AM): but Neo, so few people do anything that matters 10 years later
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:35:39 AM): like I said, I don't play hardly at all anymore
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:35:43 AM): and I do help people
Im Ngamer (12:35:51 AM): I don't think that's a fair argument
BlueDogGreen (12:36:05 AM): i dont play wow and i have yet to cure cancer :(

Gaming and Music as Artforms

Im Ngamer (12:36:06 AM): does your guitar playing help people 10 years later?
RyanWhiteGoose (12:36:11 AM): it could
Neo26988 (12:36:15 AM): Even if you're not curing cancer.
RyanWhiteGoose (12:36:15 AM): it could be therapy music
BlueDogGreen (12:36:16 AM): but ill get right on it
RyanWhiteGoose (12:36:19 AM): and help people who are ill
Neo26988 (12:36:21 AM): Just do something that's going to help you build a better future.
Infil12 (12:36:23 AM): you can't even compare learning a musical instrument to playing wow, jon...
Im Ngamer (12:36:28 AM): yes I can!
Infil12 (12:36:28 AM): how can you make such an egregious comparsion
Im Ngamer (12:36:37 AM): I did and I stand by it!
Infil12 (12:36:43 AM): give me one reason!
Im Ngamer (12:36:51 AM): what's learning music except for personal satisfaction
Im Ngamer (12:36:57 AM): and maybe to impress a few friends
Infil12 (12:36:58 AM): uhh, how about lots of stuff!
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:37:00 AM): I voluenteer at my local senior citizens home, and at the food services clinic once a week
Im Ngamer (12:37:03 AM): what if my friends are gamers instead?
Infil12 (12:37:05 AM): music is an art.
Regular Civilian (12:37:07 AM): I will say this
RyanWhiteGoose (12:37:11 AM): gaming is an art
Im Ngamer (12:37:15 AM): gaming can be an art
Infil12 (12:37:15 AM): the @#%$ it is!
Infil12 (12:37:18 AM): seriously.
Regular Civilian (12:37:20 AM): If it weren't for music, I would not be alive right now
BlueDogGreen (12:37:26 AM): hey i listen to music a lot
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:37:26 AM): gaming is an art
failurewarningV1 (12:37:30 AM): 10 years ago, would you have said, don't play GE its not worth it, but the draw of the game still attracts new fans and still has its hardcore players
BlueDogGreen (12:37:31 AM): and i also download speed runs to watch
Brian19King (12:37:35 AM): You made Ricky curse.
Brian19King (12:37:37 AM): I hope you're happy!
BlueDogGreen (12:37:37 AM): both are of equal entertainment
BlueDogGreen (12:37:51 AM): if you can play some sweet music or show me some sweet video game runs then im happy either way
Im Ngamer (12:38:02 AM): how is gaming, at the absolute peak, not an art?
Regular Civilian (12:38:04 AM): video game music
Brian19King (12:38:12 AM): uh..
Im Ngamer (12:38:15 AM): it takes practice, it's hard, needs skill and determination

Sidetracked Into Sports

Brian19King (12:38:17 AM): Jon, if anything.. it's a sport.
RyanWhiteGoose (12:38:22 AM): it IS a sport!
RyanWhiteGoose (12:38:27 AM): Im an athlete
Brian19King (12:38:28 AM): And.. it's not a sport
Im Ngamer (12:38:30 AM): hockey can't be an art?
RyanWhiteGoose (12:38:30 AM): =/
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:38:31 AM): and, sport can be art
RyanWhiteGoose (12:38:31 AM): :(
RyanWhiteGoose (12:38:35 AM): hockey is an art!
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:38:38 AM): like a perfect golf swing
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:38:42 AM): is a piece of art
RyanWhiteGoose (12:38:42 AM): ngamer knows how to get people on his side
RyanWhiteGoose (12:38:43 AM): ;)
Brian19King (12:38:50 AM): For it to be a sport, you have to sweat.
Im Ngamer (12:38:51 AM): it's what I'm best at
Infil12 (12:38:55 AM): i'm an athlete, a musician, AND a gamer.
RyanWhiteGoose (12:39:01 AM): so am I
RyanWhiteGoose (12:39:02 AM): pwned
RyanWhiteGoose (12:39:03 AM): :)
Im Ngamer (12:39:03 AM): so golf isn't a sport?
RyanWhiteGoose (12:39:09 AM): golf is a sport!
Brian19King (12:39:11 AM): Jon, go play 18 holes
Infil12 (12:39:12 AM): and i'm sorry, but being a gamer, while fun and awesome, and all that, is not an art or a sport.
RyanWhiteGoose (12:39:13 AM): so is nascar!
Brian19King (12:39:18 AM): and then go hit 500 balls
Infil12 (12:39:18 AM): it's hard, it's challenging, and it requires practice.
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:39:19 AM): don't even @#%$ say that golf isn't a spoit
Brian19King (12:39:21 AM): tell me if you're sweating.
Infil12 (12:39:21 AM): but they're not comparable at all.
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:39:22 AM): sport
BlueDogGreen (12:39:29 AM): hockey, nascar, and gold are not sports
failurewarningV1 (12:39:31 AM): duty calls
Brian19King (12:39:37 AM): gold is not a sport, you're correct
RyanWhiteGoose (12:39:38 AM): TU N'EST PAS UN SPORT
Brian19King (12:39:38 AM): How about this
BlueDogGreen (12:39:39 AM): *golf
RyanWhiteGoose (12:39:40 AM): VA T-EN!
Brian19King (12:39:41 AM): IF YOU CAN DO IT SITTING DOWN
Brian19King (12:39:43 AM): ITS NOT A SPORT.
failurewarningV1 (12:39:48 AM): good night good people, i'm off to work
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:39:53 AM): night
RyanWhiteGoose (12:39:53 AM): night fw!
Im Ngamer (12:39:54 AM): chess can't be an art?
Infil12 (12:39:54 AM): hockey is not a sport?
BlueDogGreen (12:39:54 AM): enjoy working
failurewarningV1 (12:39:54 AM): remember to vote today guys
RyanWhiteGoose (12:39:58 AM): chess is an art
RyanWhiteGoose (12:40:00 AM): and a sport
RyanWhiteGoose (12:40:01 AM): and a game
RyanWhiteGoose (12:40:02 AM): pwned
Brian19King (12:40:03 AM): Chess is neither.
BlueDogGreen (12:40:06 AM): hockey is boxing on ice :)
Infil12 (12:40:09 AM): chess is a game. it is not a sport.
Brian19King (12:40:09 AM): lol
Neo26988 (12:40:17 AM): How the @#%$ is Hockey not a sport?
RyanWhiteGoose (12:40:17 AM): so then
Neo26988 (12:40:20 AM): I don't like it either, but.
Brian19King (12:40:23 AM): lol
RyanWhiteGoose (12:40:25 AM): how is chess different than WoW?
BlueDogGreen (12:40:25 AM): lol
Neo26988 (12:40:26 AM): And no, chess is not a sport. I have like, 3 trophies. >_<
Brian19King (12:40:31 AM): It's not.
Neo26988 (12:40:32 AM): But it's still not a sport.
RyanWhiteGoose (12:40:34 AM): w00t
RyanWhiteGoose (12:40:35 AM): there we go
BlueDogGreen (12:40:37 AM): i like bowling
Brian19King (12:40:39 AM): Chess = Game = WoW
Brian19King (12:40:40 AM): yay!
Neo26988 (12:40:49 AM): I don't know anybody that is addicted to chess.
BlueDogGreen (12:40:50 AM): bowling ftw
Im Ngamer (12:40:51 AM): and all three can be art
Neo26988 (12:40:53 AM): It's a thinking mans game.
Infil12 (12:40:55 AM): neo: they exist.
Brian19King (12:40:58 AM): Ya.. no.
Brian19King (12:41:01 AM): Art=  Art
Brian19King (12:41:04 AM): Art =! Game
Infil12 (12:41:07 AM): but it's uncommon, because chess requires SKILL to be good.
Infil12 (12:41:22 AM): how many people do you know play games, but suck monkey testicles?
Im Ngamer (12:41:25 AM): you've never watched a TSA speedrun and though it was a piece of art?
Brian19King (12:41:30 AM): No.
Infil12 (12:41:33 AM): you do NOT need skill to be a gamer.
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:41:34 AM): I have
Im Ngamer (12:41:40 AM): I have, and it was
Brian19King (12:41:45 AM): You don't need skill to do anyhting though Rick.
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:41:46 AM): OoT 4:57 is a piece of art
BlueDogGreen (12:41:52 AM): yeah
Im Ngamer (12:41:53 AM): you need all kinds of skill to be a gamer!
Infil12 (12:41:54 AM): to be a serious gamer, you don't need skill!
Infil12 (12:41:55 AM): you just need time.
BlueDogGreen (12:41:57 AM): speed runs are @#%$ amazing
Brian19King (12:42:00 AM): Counter-Strike.
Infil12 (12:42:01 AM): to be a serious chess player, you need skill.
Im Ngamer (12:42:11 AM): how about CS, Infil?
Im Ngamer (12:42:16 AM): you can't say that doesn't need skill
Infil12 (12:42:17 AM): dont' get me wrong, there *are* serious gamers with lots of skill.
Im Ngamer (12:42:37 AM): WoW might not be skillful, but you can't paint all gaming with that brush
Infil12 (12:42:42 AM): to sit down and play CS competitively, you'll need skill and practice.
Brian19King (12:42:49 AM): And patience.
Brian19King (12:42:50 AM): lol
Neo26988 (12:42:51 AM): Well, what is everyone's definition of "sport"?
Im Ngamer (12:42:53 AM): a ton of both
Brian19King (12:43:08 AM): Neo: You can't do it sitting.  A score is kept.  You sweat.
Im Ngamer (12:43:10 AM): a sport is any competitive game
Brian19King (12:43:12 AM): There are rules.
Infil12 (12:43:13 AM): i'm sorry, jon, but i can't believe you compared learning a musical instrument to gaming.
(12:43:17 AM) Regular Civilian has left the room.
Infil12 (12:43:30 AM): music is a language of man, it has existed for millennia.
Neo26988 (12:43:42 AM): Eh, that's a bit silly PDO
Neo26988 (12:43:49 AM): Motor Sport = a sport
BlueDogGreen (12:43:50 AM): im with jon on this one
Brian19King (12:43:52 AM): No.
Brian19King (12:43:55 AM): Racing a car is not a sport.
Neo26988 (12:44:08 AM): Why not?
Neo26988 (12:44:13 AM): Because you're sitting down?
Brian19King (12:44:17 AM): Yup.
Infil12 (12:44:21 AM): if you had a choice to either learn to play virtuoso piano, or learn to play in the top CS clan, what would you choose??
Neo26988 (12:44:22 AM): Nah, that's just silly.
Infil12 (12:44:27 AM): what would *any* person choose?
Brian19King (12:44:34 AM): top CS clan.. I'd get moeny ;)
Neo26988 (12:44:42 AM): A sport is "a physical activity", and, driving around at that speed still takes a lot of fitness.
Infil12 (12:44:44 AM): lol, you're not helping brian :P
CieloAzor (12:44:46 AM): I don't think driving a car is a sport either, no matter how fast you're going.
Brian19King (12:44:49 AM): I know :D
Neo26988 (12:44:50 AM): How much weight do F1 drivers lose a race?
BlueDogGreen (12:44:52 AM): im going for the piano...
BlueDogGreen (12:45:04 AM): just cause i can pick up chicks with that skill more than CS
Brian19King (12:45:05 AM): Who gives a @#%$?
CieloAzor (12:45:08 AM): That doesn't mean it's not cool or impressive or whatever.
Im Ngamer (12:45:08 AM): I'd rather be incredible at every game I touched than great at every instrument I touched
CieloAzor (12:45:14 AM): I just don't categorize it as a sport.
Infil12 (12:45:22 AM): ngamer: you are in the far, far minority i believe.
Neo26988 (12:45:25 AM): Well you can't split hairs by saying "You have to be standing up"
Im Ngamer (12:45:26 AM): music doesn't drive me
Neo26988 (12:45:31 AM): What about Wheelchair Basketball?
Neo26988 (12:45:32 AM): That not a sport?
BlueDogGreen (12:45:33 AM): i would just like to be omnipotent... is that too much to ask?
Brian19King (12:45:36 AM): Oh christ.
Brian19King (12:45:42 AM): I'm not talking about parapalegics.
CieloAzor (12:45:45 AM): heh
Neo26988 (12:45:47 AM): See, there you go again!
Neo26988 (12:45:51 AM): Stop making up all these fake rules and stuff.
Brian19King (12:45:54 AM): ..?!
Brian19King (12:45:58 AM): you asked how I define a sport
Brian19King (12:46:00 AM): I told you!
Neo26988 (12:46:09 AM): You didn't mention that parapalegics were an exception!
Brian19King (12:46:14 AM): Well Christ
Infil12 (12:46:26 AM): don't make me curse again
BlueDogGreen (12:46:27 AM): hey hey hey
Infil12 (12:46:28 AM): :P
CieloAzor (12:46:30 AM): I don't really consider figure skating a sport either.
(12:46:34 AM) Neo26988 has left the room.
CieloAzor (12:46:35 AM): You can't beat somebody at it.
BlueDogGreen (12:46:36 AM): i trained the quadrapelic dance team
RyanWhiteGoose (12:46:37 AM): figure skating is a sport
BlueDogGreen (12:46:39 AM): and they rocked
Brian19King (12:46:39 AM): Okay... then "You can't do it sitting unless you're in a wheelchair, in which case you do everything sitting down!"
Im Ngamer (12:46:40 AM): that's just silly QB
(12:46:45 AM) Neo26988 has entered the room.
RyanWhiteGoose (12:46:46 AM): watch plushenko's gold medal skate]
CieloAzor (12:46:47 AM): Pfft.
Im Ngamer (12:46:47 AM): all the jumping and spinning they do
RyanWhiteGoose (12:46:49 AM): and tell me thats not pimp
Neo26988 (12:46:50 AM): Whoops, hit the ESC button whilst reaching for an M&M.
Im Ngamer (12:46:50 AM): clearly a sport
CieloAzor (12:46:53 AM): It's physical, I'm not arguing that.
CieloAzor (12:46:59 AM): It's not even a game, let alone a sport.
Brian19King (12:47:07 AM): Figure Skating is an Art
RyanWhiteGoose (12:47:08 AM): its an art
Brian19King (12:47:09 AM): IMO
Im Ngamer (12:47:09 AM): ok, how about a boxing match that goes to a decision
Brian19King (12:47:12 AM): Just like Dancing.
Im Ngamer (12:47:13 AM): is that no longer a sport?
RyanWhiteGoose (12:47:14 AM): taht's generally accepted
RyanWhiteGoose (12:47:17 AM): dancing is fun!Q
Im Ngamer (12:47:18 AM): because it depends on points
RyanWhiteGoose (12:47:20 AM): its a pasttime
Im Ngamer (12:47:20 AM): and judges
Neo26988 (12:47:20 AM): "Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively."
Neo26988 (12:47:32 AM): "A particular form of this activity."
Brian19King (12:47:33 AM): Gaming is not physical activity.
Brian19King (12:47:37 AM): Nor is driving a car.
RyanWhiteGoose (12:47:41 AM): OMG
Im Ngamer (12:47:41 AM): tell that to a DDR player
RyanWhiteGoose (12:47:46 AM): dont even tell me that
RyanWhiteGoose (12:47:47 AM): I race
RyanWhiteGoose (12:47:48 AM): carts
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:47:50 AM): wait a sec
Neo26988 (12:47:50 AM): Yeah, DDR is a game and you don't sit down
RyanWhiteGoose (12:47:51 AM): and its @#%$ tiring
CieloAzor (12:47:53 AM): At least in boxing, they were fighting against each other, Jon.
RyanWhiteGoose (12:47:54 AM): holy @#%$
Infil12 (12:47:55 AM): how about a big cup of stfu? is that a sport?
RyanWhiteGoose (12:48:00 AM): get in a GD cart before you speak
CieloAzor (12:48:00 AM): Not skating independently.
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:48:04 AM): driving a car can be a physical activity
Brian19King (12:48:06 AM): Ryan.. sorry.
RyanWhiteGoose (12:48:06 AM): DDR is like a sport too
RyanWhiteGoose (12:48:08 AM): ;)
RyanWhiteGoose (12:48:09 AM): don't worry
Brian19King (12:48:12 AM): It's not a sport though :]
Infil12 (12:48:15 AM): now we're talking DDR?
Brian19King (12:48:16 AM): And NOTHING you say will convince me it is
Infil12 (12:48:18 AM): DDR is NOT a sport.
RyanWhiteGoose (12:48:21 AM): =b
Neo26988 (12:48:24 AM): PDO.
CieloAzor (12:48:30 AM): Figure skating is a physical artform that people happen to judge.
Neo26988 (12:48:31 AM): You said a sport is you sweat, you don't sit down and you keep score.
Im Ngamer (12:48:34 AM): ok, so high jump isn't a sport because they do it independently?
Infil12 (12:48:34 AM): believe it or not, one of the scandanavian countries tried to add it to their local olympic games!!
Neo26988 (12:48:35 AM): DDR fits all that.
Neo26988 (12:48:39 AM): But now you're making more exceptions?
CieloAzor (12:48:45 AM): You can beat somebody at the high jump!
Brian19King (12:48:50 AM): DDR = Dancing
RyanWhiteGoose (12:48:56 AM): true
RyanWhiteGoose (12:49:00 AM): valid point
Brian19King (12:49:00 AM): Is Dancing a sport?
Neo26988 (12:49:00 AM): But it fits exactly what you said a sport is.
Infil12 (12:49:03 AM): DDR != dancing, brian
Brian19King (12:49:07 AM): It's close enough.
Infil12 (12:49:08 AM): DDR = stepping on arrows
Brian19King (12:49:08 AM): lol
Brian19King (12:49:10 AM): hahaha
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:49:15 AM): at amazing speeds
CieloAzor (12:49:16 AM): You'd do better comparing figure skating to painting a portrait.
Infil12 (12:49:19 AM): you haven't seen some people try to "dance" on DDR then... haha
CieloAzor (12:49:22 AM): But figure skating is more physical.
CieloAzor (12:49:28 AM): Neither is a sport.
Infil12 (12:49:37 AM): why are we even arguing about what a sport is?
BlueDogGreen (12:49:37 AM): I am a sport
Brian19King (12:49:38 AM): Okay...
Infil12 (12:49:40 AM): where is this taking us?
Brian19King (12:49:45 AM): ANYONE here who has played a sport COMPETITIVELY.
Brian19King (12:49:49 AM): Raise your hand.
RyanWhiteGoose (12:49:50 AM): HERE!
CieloAzor (12:49:53 AM): Here.
Neo26988 (12:49:53 AM): *raises his hand*
Brian19King (12:49:54 AM): And say if Video Gaming is a sport.
RyanWhiteGoose (12:49:56 AM): *raises hand*
Im Ngamer (12:49:56 AM): now you're going to ask if this CONVO will matter in 10 years
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:49:56 AM): yup
Im Ngamer (12:49:59 AM): see what I mean?
BlueDogGreen (12:50:05 AM): people run, jump, and play with me
Im Ngamer (12:50:07 AM): we might as well have been playing WoW
Brian19King (12:50:09 AM): lol BDG
BlueDogGreen (12:50:14 AM): some even score with me
BlueDogGreen (12:50:19 AM): therefore, I am a sport
Brian19King (12:50:20 AM): I scored with your mother.
Infil12 (12:50:27 AM): QB, you haven't played a sport, what are you talking about?
BlueDogGreen (12:50:30 AM): I scored with your entire family at once
CieloAzor (12:50:31 AM): Heh.
Brian19King (12:50:33 AM): lol
BlueDogGreen (12:50:35 AM): even the dead ones
Neo26988 (12:50:36 AM): So, is sex a sport? You don't always sit down, you sweat, you score.
RyanWhiteGoose (12:50:37 AM): here!
RyanWhiteGoose (12:50:39 AM): BabbelTheFish (01:50:29): It shouldn't be considered one. The people who made DDR didn't factor in that over 70% of gamers are slobs with no grace
RyanWhiteGoose (12:50:43 AM): rofl
Brian19King (12:50:48 AM): rofl
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:50:50 AM): lol
Infil12 (12:51:02 AM): DDR can be cool to watch.
Infil12 (12:51:07 AM): and it can be atrocious to watch.
(12:51:09 AM) BabbelTheFish has entered the room.
Im Ngamer (12:51:13 AM): morning Mouse
Infil12 (12:51:16 AM): if *i* play it, it's cool to watch.
BabbelTheFish (12:51:18 AM): Hay guys
Neo26988 (12:51:27 AM): Mouse, are Video Games a sport?
RyanWhiteGoose (12:51:36 AM): MOUSER!
BabbelTheFish (12:51:37 AM): IMO it depends heavily on the game
Im Ngamer (12:51:41 AM): high level competitive gaming
Brian19King (12:51:45 AM): No.
Im Ngamer (12:51:46 AM): not just games in general
BabbelTheFish (12:51:47 AM): Once I met a guy who felt Madden games were sports
BabbelTheFish (12:51:48 AM): I lol'd
Infil12 (12:52:03 AM): that's so stupid... i play a sport because i play madden on my ps2.
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:52:16 AM): I loathe traditional sports games
CieloAzor (12:52:19 AM): It can be pretty taxing on the fingers.
BlueDogGreen (12:52:20 AM): I have World Track Meet for the NES with the huge runnig bad
BlueDogGreen (12:52:23 AM): thats a sweet game
Im Ngamer (12:52:24 AM): I'm not going to make a case for the sport of recreation Luigi's Mansion
BlueDogGreen (12:52:29 AM): *running pad
Im Ngamer (12:52:30 AM): but world-class CS?
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:52:32 AM): I'd rather call up my friends and actually play football
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:52:34 AM): or w/e
Brian19King (12:52:46 AM): I've probably played CS at a higher level than anyone here Jon.
Brian19King (12:52:48 AM): It's not even close.
Im Ngamer (12:53:07 AM): you and marsh go beat SK, then we'll talk
Brian19King (12:53:22 AM): I played a couple CPL clans Jon.
holycatholique (12:53:28 AM): time to pred!
Brian19King (12:53:29 AM): Not even close.
Neo26988 (12:53:43 AM): I say we make a topic in GC about this.
Infil12 (12:53:44 AM): look at what marsh does, as an example.
Brian19King (12:53:46 AM): Hell, I played for a CPL clan.
Infil12 (12:53:48 AM): making speed runs of various games.
Neo26988 (12:53:48 AM): Could make for an interesting debate.
Infil12 (12:53:49 AM): is that a sport?
Infil12 (12:54:00 AM): it's cool, and it requires massive skill and patience and practice
Infil12 (12:54:02 AM): but it's not a sport!
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:54:04 AM): it can be considered an art form
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:54:08 AM): in some minds
Infil12 (12:54:16 AM): it can be considered *difficult*, yes.
Brian19King (12:54:21 AM): Ie: By someone who isn't truly an artist but wants to conform?
BlueDogGreen (12:54:31 AM): sport or not
Infil12 (12:54:35 AM): stupid debates, argh.
BlueDogGreen (12:54:35 AM): they're all games
Brian19King (12:54:37 AM): Give some sort of validation to what they're doing?
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:54:47 AM): who is anyone who to decide what "truly" is art?
BlueDogGreen (12:54:59 AM): I am allowed to judge that
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:55:05 AM): beauty is in the eye of the beholder
CieloAzor (12:55:05 AM): Now you're getting as deep as SZ!
Infil12 (12:55:18 AM): why don't you just go by popular vote?
Brian19King (12:55:19 AM): well, who is anyone to decide what "truly" is a sport.  I think writing Essay's is a sport.
BlueDogGreen (12:55:20 AM): JC gave me permission

Back to Gaming and Music as Art

Infil12 (12:55:32 AM): how many people in the world today do you think would put competitive gaming on the same level as musical talent?
Brian19King (12:55:40 AM): Hockey is an art form.  Music is a sport.  Poetry is math.
BabbelTheFish (12:55:40 AM): Never!
RyanWhiteGoose (12:55:51 AM): poetry is emo
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:55:52 AM): probably a number very small
RyanWhiteGoose (12:55:53 AM): LOL
BlueDogGreen (12:55:54 AM): infil has a point
BlueDogGreen (12:56:01 AM): but you know poetry, music, sport
TheBigBossman007 (12:56:02 AM): competitive gaming gets no credit
Infil12 (12:56:04 AM): some people spend their entire lives learning musical instruments. people get degrees at universities in music!
BlueDogGreen (12:56:08 AM): those have been around for centuries or more
BlueDogGreen (12:56:15 AM): gaming is new within the past 30 years
Im Ngamer (12:56:18 AM): since when has public opinion determined correctness?
Brian19King (12:56:18 AM): That's because it tries to be something it isn't Boss.
BlueDogGreen (12:56:20 AM): think of how it will be in another 100
Neo26988 (12:56:21 AM): Infil, how much longer has music been around?
Infil12 (12:56:23 AM): people play the piano for 30 years of their lives. it is not comparable in *any* way, difficulty/art form/skill wise to gaming.
Neo26988 (12:56:24 AM): Music has been around centuries.
Neo26988 (12:56:28 AM): It's grown, it's prospered.
BlueDogGreen (12:56:35 AM): OMG Neo we made the same arguement
TheBigBossman007 (12:56:35 AM): haven't made a penny for anything
BlueDogGreen (12:56:38 AM): we're like brothers now
Infil12 (12:56:40 AM): neo, do you honestly think eventually we'll see degrees for CS playing?
Neo26988 (12:56:43 AM): It's become a way of life, it inspires people, etc.
Neo26988 (12:56:48 AM): Degrees? Possibly not, but.
Brian19King (12:56:51 AM): Boss what're you talking about?
Brian19King (12:56:55 AM): Several pro gamers out there.
TheBigBossman007 (12:57:02 AM): I haven't
Neo26988 (12:57:03 AM): In 50 years, you can't tell me that Competitive Video Gaming - or whatever the equivilent is - won't be huge.
Infil12 (12:57:06 AM): and i wonder why that even is.
Neo26988 (12:57:08 AM): It's already getting bigger by the year.
Infil12 (12:57:09 AM): i honestly do.
Brian19King (12:57:12 AM): Mainly because you're not a professional gamer.
CieloAzor (12:57:13 AM): You're playing the wrong games, Boss!
Neo26988 (12:57:15 AM): Go to Korea, their gamers have super model girlfriends.
Neo26988 (12:57:18 AM): They make millions.
Brian19King (12:57:21 AM): lol
Infil12 (12:57:22 AM): this i know.
Brian19King (12:57:23 AM): no they don't neo
Neo26988 (12:57:27 AM): Yeah they do.
Brian19King (12:57:28 AM): most of them live in small apartments
Neo26988 (12:57:29 AM): Some.
Neo26988 (12:57:30 AM): Not all.
BlueDogGreen (12:57:30 AM): yeah, all 10 of them who are the top
Neo26988 (12:57:32 AM): Obviously.
Brian19King (12:57:36 AM): BDG nailedi t.
Brian19King (12:57:41 AM): Boss, go play CS
Im Ngamer (12:57:42 AM): the elite make millions, yeah
Brian19King (12:57:43 AM): You'll make some money.
BlueDogGreen (12:57:55 AM): can we buy stock in the elite yet?
Brian19King (12:57:59 AM): lol
BlueDogGreen (12:58:00 AM): itll take off soon!
BabbelTheFish (12:58:05 AM): I'd buy that
Brian19King (12:58:07 AM): Goin public?
Im Ngamer (12:58:08 AM): I don't think you have to make money to be an artform
Im Ngamer (12:58:12 AM): or a sport
Brian19King (12:58:18 AM): To be professional you do.
BabbelTheFish (12:58:19 AM): Neither do I
Brian19King (12:58:23 AM): But that's besides the point
Infil12 (12:58:23 AM): i'm sorry, but you can't compare a modern virtuoso musician, like yoyo ma or something, to someone like fatal1ty
Im Ngamer (12:58:34 AM): I can!
Brian19King (12:58:35 AM): I am going to sleep, because sleep is far more valuable than anything I'll talk about in here
Neo26988 (12:58:37 AM): Eventually, whether in a year, or a decade, or whatever...competitive gaming is going to cross the threshold from internet to "the real world".
Brian19King (12:58:37 AM): night fella's
Neo26988 (12:58:39 AM): Then look out.
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (12:58:42 AM): night
Infil12 (12:58:44 AM): how can you possible do so, ngamer?
Infil12 (12:58:50 AM): what possible argument could you have for that?
Im Ngamer (12:58:53 AM): because they're both at the top of their game
(12:58:55 AM) Brian19King has left the room.
Im Ngamer (12:59:02 AM): and have spent their lifetime perfecting their craft
CieloAzor (12:59:05 AM): Somewhat on topic...I heard an amazing guitar player/singer on the Metro on Paris and it's killing me that I'll never hear him again or figure out what song that was.
Im Ngamer (12:59:10 AM): and many enjoy watching them perform
CieloAzor (12:59:13 AM): In Paris even.
Im Ngamer (12:59:18 AM): they can do incredible things
BlueDogGreen (12:59:19 AM): internet: serious business
Neo26988 (12:59:34 AM): I can't believe this, but, I'm beginning to lean towards what Jon is saying.
Neo26988 (12:59:37 AM): What is music?
Neo26988 (12:59:41 AM): A bunch of sounds.
Infil12 (12:59:44 AM): i'm sorry, but fatal1ty has not spent his lifetime perfecting his craft.
CieloAzor (12:59:49 AM): Music is math, basically.
BlueDogGreen (1:00:03 AM): gaming is math, basically
Neo26988 (1:00:06 AM): Yet the bunch of sounds can touch humans in so many ways.
Neo26988 (1:00:14 AM): Yet, many people are the same with video games.
Im Ngamer (1:00:16 AM): music is moving your fingers and producing sounds.  gaming is moving your fingers and manipulating an environment
Infil12 (1:00:18 AM): gaming is not math... come on.
Infil12 (1:00:28 AM): now you guys are just spouting philosophical BS
BabbelTheFish (1:00:30 AM): Jon, I like that.
Im Ngamer (1:00:46 AM): I don't see why one can be an art and the other never more than a hobby
BlueDogGreen (1:00:51 AM): ok ill agree with infil there
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (1:00:54 AM): shaping of the world is coming up on my playlist again
BlueDogGreen (1:00:54 AM): i am just making @#%$ up
J Eternia F (1:01:01 AM): rsawr!<
Im Ngamer (1:01:03 AM): just because it hasn't been around 1000000 years
(1:01:05 AM) J Eternia F has left the room.
Infil12 (1:01:06 AM): *making* games is all math.
Neo26988 (1:01:06 AM): Hi Djie.
Infil12 (1:01:09 AM): but playing is not.
CieloAzor (1:01:09 AM): Bye Djie!
Neo26988 (1:01:10 AM): Or bye Djie, whatever.
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (1:01:16 AM): that means it's time for pat to sleep
Neo26988 (1:01:19 AM): To be fair.
Neo26988 (1:01:21 AM): With music and gaming.
Neo26988 (1:01:28 AM): You're doing the exact same thing, just producing a different outcome.
Infil12 (1:01:35 AM): what??
BlueDogGreen (1:01:40 AM): hey that gorilla game I played in 4th game where I got to throw banannas for answer math questions was definately all math
Neo26988 (1:01:42 AM): Im Ngamer (4:00:07 PM): music is moving your fingers and producing sounds.  gaming is moving your fingers and manipulating an environment
CieloAzor (1:01:56 AM): You don't have to move your fingers to create music!
JtXeRdFgDhJgRhFd (1:01:57 AM): night everyone
Infil12 (1:02:01 AM): you both move your fingers... that's "the exact same thing"?
Infil12 (1:02:08 AM): and QB is right.
Neo26988 (1:02:11 AM): Ok, bad choice of words.
BlueDogGreen (1:02:31 AM): i can see both sides of the arguement here
BabbelTheFish (1:02:37 AM): Anyways, I demand more front page updates!
BlueDogGreen (1:02:37 AM): both I believe there is a middle ground
CieloAzor (1:02:42 AM): Gaming and creating music are both things...so they are the same thing?
BlueDogGreen (1:02:46 AM): gaming hasnt been around nearly as long and it is still maturing
RyanWhiteGoose (1:02:50 AM): *agrees with mouser*
BlueDogGreen (1:02:51 AM): who knows exactly where it will go
Neo26988 (1:02:52 AM): As I said, QB, bad choice of words.
RyanWhiteGoose (1:02:55 AM): this argument is INSANE
BabbelTheFish (1:03:03 AM): I lost track of it ages ago
BlueDogGreen (1:03:04 AM): take the Wii for example... it will be a much more interactive experience
CieloAzor (1:03:12 AM): My word choice is an artform!
BadassFal (1:03:17 AM): bah, fell back asleep. Gonna be late for work! :(
Im Ngamer (1:03:28 AM): prose is easily an artform
Im Ngamer (1:03:32 AM): as is poetry
Im Ngamer (1:03:37 AM): so I don't disagree
CieloAzor (1:03:45 AM): You can't be too late, Fallens. It's early yet.
RyanWhiteGoose (1:03:46 AM): eatery is a cool word
CieloAzor (1:03:50 AM): But don't waste your time here!
Neo26988 (1:03:57 AM): This argument is depressing, that's what it is.
Infil12 (1:03:59 AM): QB, that last sentence you typed is right on the money
BlueDogGreen (1:04:03 AM): this arguement rocks
Infil12 (1:04:05 AM): i'm not sure why i'm trying to debate this point
Im Ngamer (1:04:13 AM): this argument is stimulating, is what it is
Infil12 (1:04:24 AM): no it isn't... haha.
Infil12 (1:04:27 AM): we're arguing for the sake of arguing
Neo26988 (1:04:31 AM): Stimulating and depressing.
Infil12 (1:04:32 AM): it's classic internet debatery
Im Ngamer (1:04:32 AM): Infil thinks we should be out curing cancer, so it will matter in 10 years!
CieloAzor (1:04:38 AM): Neo thinks that.
BlueDogGreen (1:04:39 AM): yeah, isnt that what the intraweb is for?
Neo26988 (1:04:41 AM): Actually Jon, I said that. :-P
BlueDogGreen (1:04:44 AM): flaming and argueing?
Im Ngamer (1:04:50 AM): but Infil's on the same track
Infil12 (1:05:01 AM): there's nothing wrong with gaming.
Infil12 (1:05:07 AM): i'm a gamer, i've invested a lot of time into some games.
Infil12 (1:05:14 AM): i'm proud to be a gamer, even.
Im Ngamer (1:05:14 AM): I've enjoyed this debate, so I won't regret it, 10 years later or not
Infil12 (1:05:25 AM): no need to be cynical ngamer.
Im Ngamer (1:05:30 AM): I'm not!
BlueDogGreen (1:05:31 AM): ive enjoyed this debate and will have forgotten in 10 years later
Infil12 (1:05:31 AM): or take things out of context like that.
Im Ngamer (1:05:33 AM): I will
Infil12 (1:05:50 AM): sheesh, not everything you do in life has to be remembered 10 years later.
Neo26988 (1:06:07 AM): You'd want to hope, at the very least, you don't regret it 10 years later.
Infil12 (1:06:08 AM): but the principle of playing 200 days of wow, versus spending 30 years of your life learning a musical instrument, cannot be compared in any way.
Im Ngamer (1:06:12 AM): well not remembered, but regretted
Im Ngamer (1:06:18 AM): was more the point you were making
Neo26988 (1:06:19 AM): Why Infil?
CieloAzor (1:06:23 AM): We were arguing about what is a sport and what isn't a sport.
CieloAzor (1:06:26 AM): How did we get here?
Im Ngamer (1:06:36 AM): no, we started here, then got into sport
Im Ngamer (1:06:50 AM): we moved toward sport when I made gaming an art
Neo26988 (1:07:09 AM): It certainly depends on whether those 200 days were out of enjoyment or addiction, but.
BlueDogGreen (1:07:17 AM): this arguement has spanned everything so far
Neo26988 (1:07:34 AM): You spend 30 years of your life learning an instrument because you enjoy it, I don't see how gaming is any different.
Im Ngamer (1:07:35 AM): what if I'm addicted to piano?  does that make all my time spent worthless?
BlueDogGreen (1:07:38 AM): i do agree there is a difference in 200 days of wow and 30 years of musical learning
Im Ngamer (1:07:53 AM): 30 years isn't fair though
Infil12 (1:07:55 AM): they're different things.
Im Ngamer (1:07:58 AM): let's make both 200 hours
Im Ngamer (1:08:02 AM): over 2 years
Infil12 (1:08:09 AM): good luck getting anywhere in piano in 200 days
Infil12 (1:08:21 AM): you won't get past 2nd conservatory
BlueDogGreen (1:08:42 AM): yeah well when they make a game that has unending levelling up
Im Ngamer (1:08:43 AM): so it's not worthwhile unless you spend 1000 days?
BlueDogGreen (1:08:46 AM): we'll see where 200 days goes
CieloAzor (1:08:47 AM): Well, we're talking 200 days of actual playing time I guess.
Im Ngamer (1:08:50 AM): what's the useless hobby now?!
Infil12 (1:09:02 AM): tell me, what will you do with wow after you're done with it?
Infil12 (1:09:06 AM): after you shelve wow.
BlueDogGreen (1:09:19 AM): put my pants back on
Neo26988 (1:09:22 AM): rofl
Infil12 (1:09:24 AM): besides that BDG
Im Ngamer (1:09:26 AM): you'll always have the memories
BlueDogGreen (1:09:27 AM): :)
Neo26988 (1:09:29 AM): Now you're basing stuff on lifespan, though.
Infil12 (1:09:32 AM): besides memories.
Im Ngamer (1:09:35 AM): and maybe the friendships and community
Neo26988 (1:09:39 AM): As Jon said, you'll have memories. You'll move on to conquer other video games.
Infil12 (1:09:46 AM): friendships, community, they exist in music too.
Neo26988 (1:09:53 AM): Absolutely they do.
BlueDogGreen (1:09:54 AM): piano is a loney hobby
BlueDogGreen (1:09:59 AM): wow makes you friends
Im Ngamer (1:09:59 AM): you'll carry those skills on to other gaming endeavors
CieloAzor (1:10:07 AM): Looks like the Brothers Chap must be in a coma.
Neo26988 (1:10:07 AM): Quiet BDG, my mum is a Piano Teacher. :-P
Im Ngamer (1:10:10 AM): just as you carry piano on to the next thing
Infil12 (1:10:28 AM): the way you all are making it sound, it's as if playing wow or CS is noble or desirable.
BlueDogGreen (1:10:28 AM): Neo arent you argueing AGAINST the piano here? lol
Im Ngamer (1:10:34 AM): (WoWs a bad example for carrying on a skill, I know)
CieloAzor (1:10:35 AM): But anyway, I've got a headache and need some sleep before the WC starts back up.
Infil12 (1:10:41 AM): to be good in CS or wow is a desirable trait in life.
Neo26988 (1:10:47 AM): No, I'm just saying you can't consider music a million times ahead of gaming.
Im Ngamer (1:10:48 AM): why can't it be?
Im Ngamer (1:10:53 AM): people respect you for it
Infil12 (1:10:58 AM): who does?
Im Ngamer (1:11:01 AM): you enjoy doing it, and feel good about yourself
Infil12 (1:11:02 AM): other gamers, and that's all.
Neo26988 (1:11:03 AM): Other gamers.
Neo26988 (1:11:04 AM): Well.
Infil12 (1:11:06 AM): and not even other gamers, some times.
BlueDogGreen (1:11:17 AM): hey just because I only have 4 skill points in piano and 32 in CS/WoW doesnt mean I cant improve my other traits with more levels!
Neo26988 (1:11:19 AM): Again, music has had time to grow and prosper over hundreds of years.
Im Ngamer (1:11:20 AM): so?  I don't appreciate a great pianist
Im Ngamer (1:11:28 AM): is he a drag on society now?
Infil12 (1:11:28 AM): and why not?
Infil12 (1:11:44 AM): neo: that alone should show its importance.
Neo26988 (1:11:58 AM): But you're trashing gaming because it hasn't had that chance yet.
Infil12 (1:11:58 AM): it's a language built almost into the DNA of humanity.
Infil12 (1:12:01 AM): animals use music!
Im Ngamer (1:12:01 AM): because it's not something that interests me, just as my grandpa isn't interested in CS
Neo26988 (1:12:11 AM): Anyone who appreciates a good musician.
Im Ngamer (1:12:12 AM): animals play games too
Neo26988 (1:12:21 AM): As some level of musicalness in them, for lack of a better way of saying it.
Neo26988 (1:12:31 AM): Has*
Infil12 (1:12:41 AM): we're talking not about games in general, ngamer.
Infil12 (1:12:51 AM): we're talking very specifically about high competition PC games.
Neo26988 (1:12:57 AM): Show me an animal that can play the piano.
Infil12 (1:12:58 AM): just like you said.
BlueDogGreen (1:13:09 AM): well neo your mom plays piano
Neo26988 (1:13:10 AM): So you can't say games are different becuase they're man-made, in that sense.
BlueDogGreen (1:13:13 AM): PWNT
Infil12 (1:13:13 AM): no, but i can show you animals that communicate with music.
Neo26988 (1:13:14 AM): Hahahahaha.
Infil12 (1:13:24 AM): we're comparing music vs. gaming here
Infil12 (1:13:27 AM): not piano vs. CS.
Neo26988 (1:13:33 AM): brb
Im Ngamer (1:13:38 AM): I can show you animals that learn valuable life skills through games and playing
Im Ngamer (1:13:46 AM): it's in the DNA either way
Infil12 (1:13:57 AM): high-competition PC gaming is not an art form for that reason.
Infil12 (1:14:10 AM): and this is what we're talking about here.
BlueDogGreen (1:14:22 AM): infil, do you think gaming is more closely related to sports like football or baseball or music?
Im Ngamer (1:14:24 AM): music is an art because whales use it to talk?
Im Ngamer (1:14:29 AM): how does that logic work?
Infil12 (1:14:42 AM): i'm trying to demonstrate how pervasive music is.
Infil12 (1:14:47 AM): it is not comparable to games in any way.
Infil12 (1:14:56 AM): games being high-competition gaming.
Infil12 (1:15:09 AM): basically, a man-made creation over the last 20 years (being very generous)
Infil12 (1:15:26 AM): i respect chess a lot more than PC gaming, and i wouldn't even compare chess to music.
Im Ngamer (1:15:37 AM): we keep coming back to 80% of people appreciating music and 5% appreciating high level gaming
Im Ngamer (1:15:50 AM): and again I say, I don't think this is a popularity contest
Infil12 (1:15:53 AM): think about what music can do to a person.
Infil12 (1:16:08 AM): a moving melody can make a person cry.
BlueDogGreen (1:16:12 AM): i like listening to classical piano
BlueDogGreen (1:16:23 AM): but i also know that a good speed run can destress me too
Infil12 (1:16:23 AM): i'd love to see the person who cries over the beauty of a SDA speedrun.
BlueDogGreen (1:16:39 AM): ...some or fairly impressive
BlueDogGreen (1:16:41 AM): *are
Infil12 (1:16:44 AM): absolutely, BDG
Infil12 (1:16:46 AM): i love them.
Im Ngamer (1:16:50 AM): isn't impressing enough?  why do we have to cry about it?
Infil12 (1:16:51 AM): i have many on my PC right now, actually.
Neo26988 (1:17:04 AM): Back.
Neo26988 (1:17:28 AM): What Jon just said about it not being a popularity contest is perfect.
Infil12 (1:17:29 AM): i'm trying to demonstrate, once again, why music is considered more of an artform.

Street Fighter As Inspirational

Im Ngamer (1:17:31 AM): didn't you get goosebumps when you saw and heard that Street Fighter 3 Alpha video?
Neo26988 (1:17:34 AM): 5 years ago, I hated music.
Im Ngamer (1:17:40 AM): from the tournament two years back
Infil12 (1:17:44 AM): why it exists for millennia, and why it's more of an artform than gaming will ever be.
Neo26988 (1:17:45 AM): I really did, I didn't understand why people like it, I didn't understand what was good about it.
Neo26988 (1:17:48 AM): I didn't listen to it, or anything.
BlueDogGreen (1:17:50 AM): well, *right now* music is considered much more of an art form
Im Ngamer (1:17:54 AM): where the guy makes that huge comeback and kills the other one
Im Ngamer (1:18:00 AM): and the whole place roars
BlueDogGreen (1:18:06 AM): but i wouldnt say gaming doesnt have its chance in the future to be a very special thing
Infil12 (1:18:08 AM): i know which match you're talking about ngamer.
Im Ngamer (1:18:10 AM): that is moving, that is inspirational
Infil12 (1:18:20 AM): that was a great display of skill, timing, and execution.
Im Ngamer (1:18:20 AM): I'd love to be able to do that in front of a crowd
Neo26988 (1:18:20 AM): Now, I listen to my mum play piano at a concert, or, I listen to the new Muse album, or I hear some random guy playing on the street, and it is good.
Infil12 (1:18:27 AM): but it didn't "move" me.
BlueDogGreen (1:18:31 AM): that streetfighter video was sweet
Neo26988 (1:18:33 AM): Many envokes emotions that wouldn't usually be tapped.
Im Ngamer (1:18:36 AM): then you are in the minority
Infil12 (1:18:37 AM): btw, i did that in the arcade today!
Infil12 (1:18:40 AM): (on a side note)
Neo26988 (1:18:45 AM): But likewise, you stick me down in front of an SDA Speed Run, or one of Bosshardt's new vids.
Neo26988 (1:18:47 AM): I'm equally impressed.
Neo26988 (1:18:50 AM): I wish I could do what they do.
Neo26988 (1:18:56 AM): I admire their talent and their skill.
Infil12 (1:19:15 AM): i am in the minority for what?
Infil12 (1:19:21 AM): the fact that watching the SF parry video doesn't move me?
Im Ngamer (1:19:23 AM): not being moved by that video
Infil12 (1:19:30 AM): oh puh-leez...
Infil12 (1:19:37 AM): i play SF more than anyone in the elite.
Im Ngamer (1:19:38 AM): my Dad isn't a gamer by any stretch, and couldn't believe that video
Im Ngamer (1:19:50 AM): gave him goosebumps as well
CieloAzor (1:19:56 AM): It WAS pretty awesome.
Infil12 (1:19:59 AM): if i showed that video to my non-gaming friends, they wouldn't care, know what was going on, or anything.
Im Ngamer (1:20:04 AM): you're moved by music, others are affected by something else
Infil12 (1:20:12 AM): i bet it gave him goosebumps because of the cheering of the audience.
Im Ngamer (1:20:23 AM): and why did the audience cheer?
Im Ngamer (1:20:27 AM): because they saw a work of art
Im Ngamer (1:20:28 AM): live
Im Ngamer (1:20:34 AM): and they responded
Im Ngamer (1:20:36 AM): emotionally
Infil12 (1:20:35 AM): because they're a knowledgeable crowd who appreciates the display of skill.
Im Ngamer (1:20:46 AM): and people at a concert are not?
Infil12 (1:20:45 AM): a work of bloody art... listen to yourself.
Infil12 (1:20:52 AM): i parried chun-li's super in the arcade today.
Infil12 (1:20:54 AM): i didn't get goosebumps.
Im Ngamer (1:21:05 AM): I played my guitar in my basement
Im Ngamer (1:21:10 AM): I didn't get goosebumps

Neo26988 (1:21:20 AM): Zing!
Infil12 (1:21:21 AM): are you being sarcastic?
Infil12 (1:21:26 AM): as in, i'm not good at guitar?
Infil12 (1:21:31 AM): or are you really a good guitar player?
Neo26988 (1:21:41 AM): So wait.
Im Ngamer (1:21:42 AM): I'm not arguing how good you are at guitar
Im Ngamer (1:22:00 AM): I'm arguing that you're being too close-minded in your definitions
Infil12 (1:22:13 AM): so what exactly are you trying to get me to believe?
Infil12 (1:22:22 AM): that gaming and music should be considered on the same echelon for art?
Infil12 (1:22:42 AM): that they are both equally capable of moving the same people?
Im Ngamer (1:22:50 AM): you can rate them differently
Infil12 (1:23:02 AM): and that both are desirable skills to work at that will service you well in the world?
Im Ngamer (1:23:07 AM): but I want you to admit that gaming can get nearly to the same level
Neo26988 (1:23:17 AM): I can't help but feel as if you're saying "Music touches more people, therefore, it's greater and better and blah blah blah"
Im Ngamer (1:23:18 AM): I don't think art has to service you in the world
Infil12 (1:23:22 AM): don't be throwing in "nearly" now.
Im Ngamer (1:23:23 AM): in fact I'd say it rarely does
Im Ngamer (1:23:34 AM): artists are never appreciated in their time
Im Ngamer (1:23:38 AM): as the saying goes
Infil12 (1:23:58 AM): musicians are appreciated in their time... and then years afterwards as well.
Im Ngamer (1:24:10 AM): some are
Im Ngamer (1:24:16 AM): many are not
Infil12 (1:24:31 AM): neo: music is built into the fabric of the world.
Infil12 (1:24:39 AM): it has been around for as long as humans have been.
Infil12 (1:24:47 AM): yes, i am trying to pull that such a fact counts for something.
BlueDogGreen (1:24:49 AM): you two are really going at it

The Dispute Is Settled

Im Ngamer (1:25:01 AM): me and Infil should have a talk show
Infil12 (1:25:07 AM): Infil and I
BlueDogGreen (1:25:07 AM): oh oh
Im Ngamer (1:25:08 AM): PTI on gaming
Infil12 (1:25:15 AM): ;)
BlueDogGreen (1:25:17 AM): play rock paper scissors for who wins the arguement
Im Ngamer (1:25:21 AM): fine!
Regular Civilian (1:25:29 AM): are you still arguing?
Im Ngamer (1:25:36 AM): BDG, count 1-2-3
Im Ngamer (1:25:41 AM): then we'll IM you our pick
Infil12 (1:25:45 AM): i'm not even really arguing.
Infil12 (1:25:51 AM): well, i guess that's not true :)
BlueDogGreen (1:25:57 AM): ok
BlueDogGreen (1:26:03 AM): are you two ready?
Im Ngamer (1:26:06 AM): yes

Infil12 (1:26:34 AM): settle this over rock paper scissors??
BlueDogGreen (1:26:38 AM): yeah
BlueDogGreen (1:26:49 AM): they have a $50,000 RPS competition on tv
RyanWhiteGoose (1:26:52 AM): I did rock paper scissors tourny at school today
RyanWhiteGoose (1:26:54 AM): first to 50
BlueDogGreen (1:26:55 AM): so why not for arguements?
RyanWhiteGoose (1:26:56 AM): I won
RyanWhiteGoose (1:26:57 AM): :D
Im Ngamer (1:27:12 AM): now he's going to argue we can't, because RPS isn't woven into the fabric of the universe!
Infil12 (1:27:17 AM): what if they settled the stanley cup game 7 OT with a game of RPS?
Regular Civilian (1:27:25 AM): that would be amusing
Infil12 (1:27:28 AM): there are reasons why it's not used as a settling medium for certain things. hehe.
Im Ngamer (1:27:31 AM): make as much sense as a shootout
Neo26988 (1:27:32 AM): I'd like it more than the actual hockey game.
BlueDogGreen (1:27:32 AM): Oh infil, you so silly!
Neo26988 (1:27:33 AM): For sure.
Neo26988 (1:27:39 AM): Again, it's in the eye of the beholder.
BlueDogGreen (1:27:52 AM): infil if you want to settle this with a battle to the death, then thats fine too
Im Ngamer (1:27:58 AM): fine, we'll have Neo stand in for you
BlueDogGreen (1:27:58 AM): but i figure RPS is easier
Neo26988 (1:28:00 AM): Many people would admire gaming talent over musical talent, I don't see how you can discount them because they're a minority.
Im Ngamer (1:28:02 AM): Neo, you're the new Infil
Neo26988 (1:28:05 AM): :(
