Rankings Clean-Up (Autumn 2018 Edition)
« on: October 08, 2018, 05:40:39 pm »
Every once in awhile, I like to address the state of the rankings towards the bottom and assess how things are changing. While discussion for the top of the rankings is naturally more interesting, it's also worth viewing the lower levels because they form the barrier to entry for newer players. With the increasingly hyper competitiveness of The Elite, some may argue that this may deter potential newbies as achieving points becomes more and more difficult, while others argue that the value of points are simply improving and that newbies will simply have higher standards than playerbases before them. We have certainly seen a lot of new talent out of the most recent wave of players, including Haydos, Joris, Frosthops, and more, and I expect more future players to rock the rankings as they have!

Along with this, it's also good to be shedding the old and do away with terrible times still worth points, and make the rankings prettier and more respectable, which comes from creating new pointless times and setting clearer standards. The Boring 4 non-WR times (Dam A 0:54, Runway A 0:23, Bunker 1 A 0:18, and Archives A 0:17) all long gone has done a great deal in pushing new players to strive for better and tidy up the ranks, and there are more times like them that are on the same way out. Part of this thread is also to incentivize new players with cool potential goals that are easy to achieve at lower skill levels should they be interested.

To start, there are currently 15 players who only have 5 points left through Streets Agent 1:14: Adam Miller, GreasePig, Bruno Alberto, Foxdie, James Taylor, Kaleta, NGamer, Moltov, Marc Robert, Michael Gannt, EverAlert, Dark Slayer, Scott Lowe, William Lacey, and William Zino. Bringing Streets Agent 1:14 down to 0 would set the new bottom standard to a respectable 1:13, clear out several stragglers at the bottom of the ranks, and push newer players to immediately use the new strat on Streets Agent right off the bat. Who knows, maybe we'll see some more skipped 1:13s. :v

Another older standard that's nearly dead is Surface 1 Agent 1:04 sitting at just 3 points left. Surface 1 Agent has always been a more scaled-back IL compared to the traditional Boring 4, in that there are always far less WRs, the time under it is worth more points, and lesser times even still have some point value. There's also likewise an insane untied that could be nabbed. Once 1:04 goes out, once again, players must step up to achieving 1:03 for a current meaty 60 pointer or otherwise have 0 on the level.

Caverns 00A has also been getting remodelled continuously for years, and we're finally at the point where the rankings will soon look like an actual level:

There's that huge 18 second gap between two players, with a random collection of garbage below. With just 8 more N/As filled in for a time not even under 2 minutes, Caverns 00A will create 37 seconds of new pointless times! Even the next new player has the potential to cut out 8 of them! It'll be really nice to see that you have to actually be competent at the level in modern times to get points.

There are currently 3 players on their last legs with 1 point left: Ryan Woodward with Train SA 1:50, and both Jbop and Shadow with Surface 2 Agent 0:50. If anyone wants to dunk them to 0, go for it. :nesquik:

Wouter, one of if not the most legendary Goldeneye players still has Statue 00A 2:23, which is sitting at just 1 point left! It would be pretty wild to see one of the greatest players to wind up with a 0 on his page!

Archives SA/00A 0:57s are both at 2 points left, with 0:53-0:56 providing four different levels of standards of skill. Knocking off 0:57s like in the case of other levels will force newer players to strive for modest 0:56s when they first learn Archives; a great way to build up some of that initial OCB.

I won't touch on Perfect Dark too much as the rankings as a whole are a mess of suboptimization, but one major case is Defection Agent 0:07 with just 1 point left! Dropping this to 0 would further push players to go for 0:06 to start if they didn't already have motivation to do so, but also Axel will get his first 0 pointer in PD, Dark Slayer with a non-Deep Sea 0 pointer, and 5 players would lose their final point: Darkiller, Door, Greatmax :nesquik:, Klewer, and SadisticMystic!

Finally, I'll provide a list of all Goldeneye times worth 5 points or less for those who are newer to the game, looking to put sentimental value into achieving lower-level times, and/or interested in making the ranks stronger:

Posts like this one are honestly very enjoyable to read through. Maybe it's because I fall into the category of newer players, but I really like seeing all this information laid out in such an engaging and concise way.

I'm gonna be buying a new console soon to start playing the game again. I didn't know really where to start, so I took inspiration from dugg's brilliant "Relic Hunting (for newer players)" thread and made myself a table of extremely talented (or at least notable) players from previous eras who are now outside the Top 150/under 500 points. I had only thought to use it for myself, but this topic has given me an excuse to share it. The list includes the player's name, notable achievements when they were in their prime, plus current point total and remaining times worth points (for players with totals above 150 points/inside the top 200 I’ve only included scores worth ten points or less).
Sorry if it's a bit of a mess, I've tried to clean it up to make it more presentable.

Update: I've expanded the list to include anyone who achieved a Rare WR outside the original boring 4 (with the exception of Pauliwood, who has Duel LTK/DLTK WRs but is currently active and therefore obviously doesn't belong on this list).

Awesome post, thanks for sharing!

Note that a lot of dates for ancient PRs are lost in time. In particular, Wheatrich was not the first to achieve Duel 0:03, but rather has the oldest documented date for it. Others had achieved it before, but we don't know exactly when.

Ah dammit, I'll take him out, then. I used the Elite website for The Duel because I couldn't find any other records for it. I used the Rare WRs for everything else, do you know much about how incomplete it is or how they cobbled the older records together?

Edit:

Tyler that jerk/Renemesis

Er, I definitely didn't write this :rollin:
Is there something I'm missing/don't know about on this subject?

Yes, several years ago one of the admins of this forum (he is so unpersonable that it is in your best interest if I do not mention his name) added a script to forum posts to automatically change this guy's last name to "that jerk".

I used the Elite website for The Duel because I couldn't find any other records for it.
Some from the WR DB are still accessible here (at the very bottom), but from the looks of it I doubt it's more complete or accurate than the rankings.

Heh. Yup. Down to a single point. I seem to run into this problem every decade or so :)

But I'm getting ready to unload a massive hoard of 2-pointers.

Awesome post, thanks for sharing!

Note that a lot of dates for ancient PRs are lost in time. In particular, Wheatrich was not the first to achieve Duel 0:03, but rather has the oldest documented date for it. Others had achieved it before, but we don't know exactly when.

This is 100% correct, though lol @ my name coming up anywhere in any of this.

Every time that loses its last point is another month before I get any. For you, setrack.

Nevermind just got some free LTK points.
