« on: June 09, 2006, 07:06:00 pm »
So i recently dusted off my N64 and am currently playing through Perfect Dark on perfect Agent.  Last time I only beat it on special.  In my search for strategy I stumbled across here and all the WR videos.  Pretty sweet, sometimes I'm not even sure whats going on when I watch them.  Some of the tricks to save time double as saving health too!  like decoding the safe while watching the cinema scene.  I doubt i'll evr be seriously competing for records, but ill have fun trying to rush through some of my favorite levels.  Ohh, I noticed that in lots of the records people use the "look down" technique, of look at something simple like the wall when in the elevator in datadyne levels to keep the frame rate under control and thus save time?  So would using an overclocked N64 be legit or cheating?

Hey there Brett, be sure to check the PD strats on the new Wiki, they should be helpful in figuring out what's going on even when the video moves too fast to catch!

speedrunwiki.com/Perfect_Dark

And yes, overclocking the N64 is not allowed for Elite competition.  You have to play on a standard system using a standard cart, no cheating devices attached (of course), using a standard Nintendo controller.  However, if you actually have experience overclocking machines, I bet you could do some good business around here.  I know there are alot of Eliters with spare N64s who are dying to be able to play 4 player Challenge 30, or even two player co-op on, at a constant 30fps without any lag.  Which, if rumors are true, you're able to do quite easily through overclocking.

Simply just somehow making the N64 faster than it normally is, for better frame rate in games basically.

I have some vid of an overclocked N64 test for PD but I don't know anything about it really, just got the vid from a friend sometime.

I didn't even know you could do that !
Indeed, it would surely be great for 4P challenges or co-op !

It really isn't as good as it sounds. It usually just causes problems(though i've never tried it on an N64).

unfortunately I don't have any experiance overclocking an N64, I was just curious about where the line is drawn, as both "look down" and overclocking improve the framerate.  Apparently overclocked systems work really well though with perfect dark, but simply just won't boot with some games which just wernt ment to run at those speeds.  they also recomend using a later, clear funtastic 64.  There are some guides on the net if you know how to solder and have a good understanding of the internals of electronics.

its actually one of the easier levels once you know where your going.  And ofcourse after Ive beaten it watching YE's video makes perfect sense.  My route was exactly the same except I met elvis via the very first blue staircase instead of the room with the big circular thing.    How does he hit the green buttons on the circular thing so fast anyways?   Or did he just play that level a billion time over and over until it finally worked out???

So will Elvis make it to the pool room safely regardless of how many guys are left in the hallways and if you skipped the golden hallway section???

Elvis can die on his return. However, the level ends when you get to the end, not when Elvis does. Running from Elvis to the end takes about 40 seconds, so Elvis only has about 40 seconds of combat in which he may possibly die. Elvis dying is very rare though.

And I'm actually checking the colour of the Xray panels before pressing B. In my SA vid, the 4th panel was the last one left.

I guess it was actually the WR for PA that I was watching before.  Still not sure how hitting the whole panels works.  I seem to always walk a full circle around them.  In the PA WR theres this one spot right before elvis where he wastes at least full second killing one of the guys at the top of a ladder, also, you went through the bottom of the slanted walkway right before the very end, which is slightly faster.  Think you have another wr in ya???   Ive got tons more questions...ill prolly play through the rest of the game then make one big post.

btw - having the music instead of the PD noise makes the videos much more awsome!

In BB's PA CI defense run:
he opens the doors to the shooting range and duel room but never goes in to save the hostages?   How does this work?  Do you only have to actually save the upstairs ones?

Is there any particular reason why he uses the second combat boost when he does?  Is combat boost just slow motion or do the enymeys get slightly worse to?

Does the breaking the glass with the devestator not work?  He sneeks by the gaurd cloaked.

You need to save a certain amount of hostages. He opens the doors so the guards kill those hostages.

Combat boosts are just slow motion. They allow for greater reflexes. We use them where we do because those are the parts of the level where we'd lose the most time at normal speed.

Yes, you can break the glass with the Devastator and drop through it. But it doesn't save time at all because you have to wait for Carrington's speech. The entire level revolves around Carrington's speech. For Agent, we investigated using breaking the glass. This needed an entire strat change in order to make it work.

I thought in PA you could only let one hostage die.  I know that in the frigate level of goldeneye you can only let ONE hostage die on 00 agent.  So all the hostages in the holodeck and in the firing range, 5 of em, can be killed as long as you save the 4 upstairs?

ombat boosts seem to make things billions of times easier, i swear the gaurds react slower.

I'm so behind the boat...wish I had discovered this place when everything was happening.  So how exactly does speech skipping work, i cant really get it to work.  Its more complicated than just pausing while someone is speeking isnt it???

my time is so bad, its 3:10 on PA.  I can never activate all three auto guns without meeting some soldiers.

If you save all hostages upstairs it doesn't guaruntee a completion. You have to hope at least one guy in the firing range lives.

Speech skip works by pressing start as soon as the line is started. It gets easier if you practice and get used to the timing. Not all speeches can be skipped, and skipping speeches in CI is useless because you still have to wait as long as you normally would for the level to end.

I don't think the cinema matters for the guards, you just have to do the autoguns fast enough so you don't run into anyone. However, you should time the cinema so the lift is open when you get there allowing fastest access to upstairs.

At world record speed, there's normally a guard down a hallway who tries to take a shot at you (but misses because you're already gone through the next door). When starting out, you won't be as fast and will likely confront him. Do your best to ignore him and just run past.

It kind of depends.

Sometimes the guard is there and takes a chunk of my health, when I feel like I had a fast run.  Other times hes not there when I've had slower runs. I think the speed of the guard varies sometimes. Such as thrusts and fidgets, and he also can sometimes get caught in the door. Which would slow him down.

well i always run into 1 gaurd just past the second console, sometimes two, and then a third gaurd in the hallway where the third console is.  I speed strafe the whole way, and break the glass after the first console.  Is there a strat to activating the consoles, i dont always get them the first time...do you guys find it works better if your not absolutely pressed against them?

If you get right up close to the console, it wont work, you have to have a little bit of distance.

finally got it so that i only meet one guy between the seond and third console.  If I could activate the second console without even stopping then im sure he wouldnt be there at all.  I find that when i open the doors to the holodeck and firing range before going upstairs, the bitch girl won't give me the devastator and just spins so she isnt faceing me.  WTF is up with that?

ohh, and something is seriously off with the timing of carringtons speech, i had already defused the bomb and was in the finish hanger before he told me to, i had to wait for about 10 seconds before the level finished.

Ok, The reason why the hostage wont give you the ev is the hostages must be alive in the firing range. (at least for agent). The speech thing is really gay about this level, Im sure YE couls help.

On a speed run you go so fast that Carrington's speech isn't finished when you finish the level, but the level won't actually end until his speech is done. I'm not sure, but I think if you are fast enough you can get him to skip part of his speech, but like Zergy said YE would be able to help you more.

With the devastator I think you can't let any hostages upstairs die, and there is a chance that either person in the room will give it to you, not just the girl.

Wow, Im learning things every, time I am in a disscusion about a strat!

I thought only the girl could give you the dev. But Steve knows his stuff.

About the hostages moving around, I dont think that effects it. It can just make it harder to align yourself with the hostage that will give you the dev..  Which, in some cases you could the chance to get the dev.

^ Is this correct? ^

The hostages in the firing range must be alive for you to receive the Devastator. This gives you awful consistency with the WR strat, because you open those doors before you go upstairs. The firing range hostages must knock out the guards. For SA, we open the firing range after doing the upstairs part so that's not a problem.

If the hostages are still alive, the closest hostage will usually give you the Devastator. Stand right next to the girl and face her.

As mentioned above, the level will not end until Carrington has finished all of his speech. None of his speech can be skipped no matter how fast you are. If you uplink too early, he won't say his next line until you have finished the uplink (thus wasting 10 seconds). This is why breaking the glass and dropping down wouldn't save time - you'd be uplinking too early. The glass strategy works on Agent because objective 1 completes while I am way upstairs. This starts Carrington's speech very early compared to SA and PA.

See what I mean now about the entire level revolving around Carrington's speech?

ya I get exactly what you mean, but in theory, the breaking the glass trick would work for someone who is slightly behind WR time, right?  Because then after the glass shortcut they would be on track for wr time.  So once I get to the ship, what is the line that i want him to have said before i uplink???

It's got nothing to do with being behind WR time, it's simply a fact that you ARE behind WR time when using the dev strat.

You never have to worry about carrington's speech on ci a and sa - you can go as fast as you like and not get screwed by the speech (heh, most of the time). So just play;)   If you're talking pa you need to not cross the square arch (just before ship) before carrinton say "files".

edit: and even then, that's for the old PA strat. The new one requires no waiting.

If the ship was not there, one of the objectives didn't complete. And to push characters, like the Pres, you gotta make him look to one side, then to another, and so on. The fast way of doing this (check any Statue vid on GE, at the Valentin part) is using C-right and C-left, and moving backwards. Or you can use opposite strafes.

Whatever, someone can explain that better.

You can get that door open. I think there is a skedar inside, then another locked door which cannot be opend. If you use an x-ray scanner you can see nothing beyond that door.

Why do the wall sticky dev grenades fall off the pillars some times?  For the glitches in the gourge, the first one is just running off the edge and pressing(holding) forward, right?  How do you gap the gap where the bridge should be without activating it?  What is the best way to take out the skedar army?  How do I do it with shooting through walls/ mass secrets?

thanks

For skedar army fire a wall hugger at the base of the 3 corners with the 2 tanks. For the final tank just switch to Callisto with high impact shells and shoot through the tank.

having trouble with mian sos here.  Do you guys reommend using the phycosis gun on people, like the guy with the double magnums?  The part that I cant seem to do well at all is when you drop through the whole to the blue guy area.  Sometimes the blue guys come up behind me when im sniping from the hole.  Is there actually an open route to get behind me?  Or are they just spawning there?

There are 4 possible darts for the Psychosis Gun. Obviously use one on Mr. Double Magnums, while keeping 3 for when you're about to drop in the hole. Nail one guy while you look down in that area, and try to get another 2 on your side as you're down there. Just be patient, but don't be TOO slow...dur
