Nice work guys!
« on: November 30, 2005, 12:49:00 pm »
Hey guys, been awhile.  I heard about Perfect Dark Zero coming out, so in recent days I had a rush of nostalgia and had a lot of fun downloading the latest vids and reading some threads here.  Anyway, I am really impressed how you all keep improving your times and setting new records.  All the new strats are awesome: Extraction SA, Infiltration SA, and the Crash Site mine throw were all news to me.  Thinking about all the new discoveries since I first stopped playing is incredible (and embarrassing).  For awhile now, it seems that has been Matt's area of expertise, so I will give him due credit, as I am still a real brat when it comes to that type of thing.

The videos have really become a collective work of art too.  I only have to see a few of them before the craving returns to try and play again.  That pursuit of perfection, albeit in an imperfect game, is still a fascinating challenge to me.  Amazing to see accomplishments from long time players like Karl and Wouter... Even you "new" guys have loads more experience with the game (and talent!) than I did.  Congrats to Bosshardt for really crushing both games.  I also like YE's attitude that he seemed to take in one post.  It's all about striving for those truly great untied records - putting in a lot of effort for just one sweet run.  Two of Wouter's GE Agent runs are great examples I think.  It helps prove that for better or for worse, the longer, more complicated levels in PD will always have room for improvement.  As difficult as it is to keep pushing the limits, everyone knows there are still some relatively weak records out there.  Keep at it and good luck.

Anyway, didn't mean to get all poetic there.  Thought I'd try to post for once without stirring up unnecessary drama with a typical self-absorbed ego-maniacal rant!  Also, I think it's really cool that Perfect Ace is doing really well despite being so young.  He was nice enough to message me a few times too, so congrats to him.

P.S. In CI PA, why doesn't Bryan free the last two hostages with a Devastator grenade over the wall?  That was my original plan when I realized you could fire over those walls...

Thanks for the comments, it's much appreciated. I should be able to start playing again soon too.

Regarding CI PA, you can kill a max of 2 hostages. The current strat involves the holo girl dying, and one firing range hostage. The other firing range dude must live, which is luck. Simply put, too many hostages would die if you shot a grenade over the wall.

really great to see you posting, <3 your posts.

I hope you'll be back in action someday in GE/PD, I think you have good potential.

I'm sure you could still be full of surprises, WR-wise, but also strategy-wise.

Hit me up if you want to talk about any strats or whatever.

Enjoy your stay for however long it may last :)

It IS possible to kill both guards and and no hostages in that room, but it took me about 100 shots using an emulator... so it's not a viable strat to adopt any time soon.

Nice to hear from you Paragon8)

Why don't you go to the Far lift instead of the first one? Then do that other hostage room first.

I think getting the Dev is a lot more rare to get if you use the far lift and go to the other hostage room first.  And it's cool to get complemented from a legend of the game in the past. :)

Oh, another thing.  If you watch my 142 you notice that the lift just got back up as I got there.  If you shoot a dev shot over the wall and save the hostages somehow, you'd be too fast for the lift surely.  You'd have to call it up I guess, which could work then... it is a level I wouldn't mind playing if such a strat works.

I questioned those strats myself not too long ago and experimented with diffrent strats and changes. Didn't find anything too useful though.

I do remember trying out those lifts but i don't remember why i screwed that, something about the speed of the lifts or something maybe?

There is simply a rule that you must go to that room first to get the devastator. At least that's what I always thought.

If that's not right, which I think it is, then the reason for not going to the far room first is time. A hostage in the firing room dies probably 99.9% of the time, maybe 100%. The idea for getting a dev is to get it before a hostage dies. If you go to the far room first, then you're too slow. Yeah.

Yeah that's probably it. Though you could use the far room if you are crazy and like levels like Frigate :p

Of noteworthiness is that the max for CI PA is around 1:32.

I figure max for SA is 126/127.  Where do you only lose 6 sec on PA?

you have to get the devestator (wasting around 2/3seconds)
you have to go to the other room and fire the dev shot (wasting around 3 more seconds.
That's all, or something else?

here's another way

Watch more cinema for the lift to come
don't open the firing range door so you can go to the far lift, and get the dev.
And pause on carringtons speech

Why not that?
