I thought this was interesting....i never knew what it really meant before! It also sounds as though our usage is a load of bullshit. Gamers probably used it originally to refer to firing their weapons, but someow its got to mean our special l33t movement. Weird

When I first started "strafing" I actually called it side stepping.

On PC FPS games (like Half-life), strafe = side stepping. That's probably the most correct meaning for that word, game-wise.
On Rare FPS you go forward + side, which has some "side" on it, so it's not wrong to call it strafe. I guess.

"Gaming
The term strafing is also used in computer gaming to describe the practice of side-stepping, typically to avoid enemy fire."
We use it for the combination of side-stepping and forward movement.

but the point is, the link between strafing and movement of any kind is one that WE, the gamers, created. Its not surposed to mean that at all....and i had assumed that strafe meant sidestep since the year dot. Not so.

Yeah, like "woot", which is about the gayest thing ever. I heard it was used for online games ages ago meaning "We Owned the Other Team," congratulating teammates and stuff, but now it's used as an expression of happiness, much like saying yay.
I don't like terms like that, I think they're overused and nerdy

I knew of that meaning. The meaning in the context of games is pretty widely used too though. Like...I think I've heard it used in instruction books to describe a way of moving.
