I made a comparison vid between Rayan's and David's Dam 00 1:58, after reading this comment in the WR topic:

Quote
Quote:
My dam 158, clean run with 6:1 no errors really.
Rayans 158: clear stucks, slow strat, bad bug throw, crappy boosts.

Dam 00 158 - Rayan Isran - David Clemens (.avi, DivX 6)
Dam 00 158 - Rayan Isran - David Clemens (YouTube)

Rayan has a faster start, but slows down after the double gates. About equal after the lock shot. David's much faster on the first alarm, and holds a steady advantage until the computer room. Rayan has a little stuck in the computer room, but three clean boosts on the way back pulls him slightly ahead. This holds until the last alarm, where David's faster finish pulls him ahead by 3-4 frames.

Can we learn anything about PAL vs. NTSC from this? Not to my admittedly untrained eye :)   David's run was cleaner, but Rayan got better boostage and the two runs in general are remarkably similar. At no point does somebody pull ahead for no apparent reason - it's always because of boosts, stucks, or better lines.

(about the vid: I timed them from the first frame with ammo visible to the last frame with ammo visible. Then I upsampled Rayan's vid to 29.97 fps so I could put them together. Used AviSynth and VirtualDub, encoded with DivX 6.)

I don't know about the rest of dam rly, but my argument for ntsc's advantage on dam was purely the better likeliness of a fast gate. but it could just be my bad luck that I always seem to have. ><

I've been playing around with a couple more comparison vids, if anyone is interested.

Bunker 1 SA: Rayan Isran 0:22 vs. David Clemens 0:22
Jungle A: Illari Pekkala 0:52 vs. Rayan Isran 0:52

If anyone has suggestions for others, or comments on these ones, let me know here or by sending a message to me via YouTube.

Unfortunately some of the other ones I've looked at have proven impossible because the vids are captured badly. Take Rayan's Frigate SA 1:02 for example... the actual real-world time of the run in the vid is about 1:05 using 25 fps. I'm choosing to assume that it's not just a bad fake job :)

The Bunker 1 SA vid has high end times, but since both runs were close to each other, I made the vid anyway. This might just be weirdness with the game's timer, someone with more knowledge than me may be able to comment on that.

For a good comparison, you should skip from the frame where the pause starts to where the pause ends. On both vids. That way, the video's are simular and then you can compare them.

Keep in mind that because of capturing and converting, possible different framerates, the video's can differ a bit in speed from the original run. Therefor, it is just an impression and will never be a 100% trustworthy comparison. So no know, might help you out a bit :D

Good luck!

Gah, noob mistake...

Is it known which frame in the pause stops the game's timer, and which one starts it again? Since pauses can have different speeds... I'm guessing I can just take the first frame that displays the options on the watch to the first frame that hides them again, but do correct me if I'm wrong :)

cut the pauses on the exact time in both vids will do the job.

Don't bother the timer, just make shure the timer stopped. Cut it on a frame which you can easily identify yourself.

Is that helpful to you?

that is a good one!

remember that your custom timer is not entirely accurate, since you dont know when the official GE timer stops and starts when you press "start".

It looks good!

I've updated the vids with pauses now:

Bunker 1 SA: Rayan Isran 0:22 vs. David Clemens 0:22
Dam 00: Rayan Isran 1:58 vs. David Clemens 1:58

I just cut out the frames inside the pause... The problem with pausing the timer and showing all the frames is that the timers get out of sync with each other, which kind of eliminates the point of a comparison vid. I assume that people looking at these vids know what the players are doing in the pauses anyway, so it's just as well to skip them.

Thanks guys, and let me know if I'm doing anything else stupidly :)

Yeah, I know... But as long as the sync point is the same in both vids, the relative difference should be correct, and that's the most important thing. I try to be as fair as possible in getting the place where the timer starts synced up. In the dam vid it was easy, but in the other two it was a bit difficult (Rayan's bunker vid fades in so the ammo isn't visible right away, and on jungle he switches away from the gun before the ammo appears).

Edit:
A couple more...

Surface 2 SA 0:54 - Simon Sternis vs. David Clemens
Dam A 0:53 - BB vs. DC vs. DC vs. IP vs. MK vs. WJ

The dam vid is just all of the captured vids I could quickly find online minus Luke's (sorry, but 7 doesn't make a grid and I had to pick someone...) Not too useful though since the end times are so much different.

Awsome videos, I love it.  Really glad to see my idea I had from watching the winter Olympics downhill overlays is going main stream.  It's too bad recording methods can vary the playback speed by 1% or else the added timers could till you almost exactly how close to you were to going over or under a second.

Another thing, I think pal might play slower, meaning the time your playing is slightly slower, but the in game timer runs proportionally slower, but maybe not exactly proportionally slower which could account for ntsc/pal advantages on certain levels.

So when you compare PAL to ntsc in real time PAL seems to be slightly slower at least by the small sample size we have so far.

from another comparison between my 0:53 and an NTSC 0:54, PAL runs at a completely @!!@+@ up speed throughout the level, constantly speeding up and slowing down in different places. I got 0:53 because my run was far smoother, but they still finished before me in real time.

also you suck for not chosing my vid

It probably depends a bit on how you make the comparison vid. Because NTSC and PAL run at separate frame rates, you have to do some kind of conversion... the simplest is just to throw extra frames (approx. 5 per second) into the PAL feed, which could make it look like it's speeding up and slowing down all the time (because the player moves farther per frame, but has an extra frame every once in a while). For my vids I've chosen to do an interpolation, so it tries to fill in the extra frames with the missing information. It makes the video quality look poorer when freezing a frame, but makes the motion smoother when it gets played.

I actually made a new dam vid a while ago but had problems with the upload and never got around to it again... Anyway, here it is:
Dam A 53 - BB - DC - DC - HB - IP - JB - LS - MK - WJ

And I've done a new Jungle A vid with Illu's new WR:
Jungle A - Illari Pekkala 0:51 & 0:52 vs. Rayan Isran 0:52
(there's a slot available for David's vid whenever it gets made)
