So I bought a DVD recorder...
« on: July 23, 2007, 07:47:00 pm »
UPDATE!! SKIP TO LAST AREA TO SEE WHAT'S NEW!

Thats right.  My VCR broke.  But here, situation analysis.

I'm working at the Canadian Open golf tourny this week and will be making almost $1k.  I will have money to spend, and since I'd be going to Best Buy or something to spend $80 on a VCR, I may as well get a capture card for $120 when I'm there.

In the meantime I'll either play kart or just play GE levels I know I won't WR on, or continue to suck like I have been all summer, or maybe get laid.  I'm not quite sure as of yet.

But I have a few questions.

Anyone know how to get a good/new VCR for under $80?

Anyone know how to get a capture card for under $120?

These prices seem to be what the cheapest models of these products sell for at Best Buy or Future Shop.

This computer (my laptop) has only a 400 MHz processor, but the family PC has a 1.1 GHz processor which should be OK with a ccard.  I might get a new-ish laptop for uni this summer too, so what kind of different capture cards are there?  PCM-CIA or something?  I think USB might be the best choice for my situation but please enlighten me.

Thanks everyone.

DVD/VCR combos can run pretty cheap, if you'll be needing a DVD player also.  Capture card... AVI Wonder Pro xx or whatever like everybody has works a champ, and $120 CAD sounds about right.. a bit expensive actually.

See what the prices go for a dvd recorder before investing into a new vcr. new vcrs are like 80 which is a rip for sure, since you can get dvd players for 30 bucks or so.

also my cap card was like 60-70 3 years ago, so look around for those 2, best buy is a rip most likely id recommend a local place or something usually you can get stuff much cheaper from those, ive noticed myself.

Mouser and I both have the Mercury TV Tuner Card, which is a good one as well. It's pretty cheap, I bought it for $30. It gives a cleaner picture than the ATI Wonder Card. That one actually sucked.

Heh you seem to be going expensive, my capture card was $60 and my VCR $40, although the VCR isn't great lol, but it's good enough for GE recording.

1.1GHz is barely enough to capture properly. You'd be doing heaps small resolutions if you wanted to used that PC. Like 160x120. 400MHz won't capture anything it all - it will have a crappy frame rate, drop frames all over the place, and will stop capturing after a few seconds.

You'll want to get a new PC if you're going to get a capture card. You're probably better off investing in a DVD recorder.

Says you!

Back before I had my new computer I was capturing decent videos with a 600Mhz processor, using the same method that I do now. It's all in the encoders basically.

A capture card with composite inputs might be worth looking into... that would allow you to connect your N64 directly to the capture card. Whether it would be playable is a bit dependent on the card I guess, since some might lag the signal a bit too much. But in theory it lets you skip the VCR entirely and record directly to disk...

I can play it directly on my PC but it feels wrong... like the screen is too small or something. I think it does lag every so slightly - it's hardly noticable but stops me from playing it directly on my capture card. Also, I wouldn't capture as I play live either because I don't like that way of capturing (I've have to edit the footage to remove parts).

I record to VCR while playing on the TV, then when I come to capture I play the VCR tape, maybe play some music and capture using WME. No editing required. That's the Aussie way.

Jeez, a VCR for more than $50 is a complete ripoff. I also got a great capture card for just $30 - ATI TV Wonder, it does all you really need it to do.

computers don't read dvd's, dvd drives do. the computer can "read" the dvds via the drive.. which can be installed, which often goes automatically too. so bad excuse there.

playing direclty into your CC is pretty bad.  but the ATI Wonder Pro or whatever for probably $70 or 80 CAD has the composite input, and you just do what YE said.  It's very easy.  And just drop the quality a bit, don't get a new PC or something lol.

ok sorry for bumpage, but I'm heading out to get a DVD recorder either tonight or tomorrow.  Only my sister's laptop can read DVDs, but I'm getting a new laptop for uni really soon which will be able to.

Basically I'd like to know if you can buy a DVD reader for a computer, install that, and whatever.

And also just keep this topic here for any problems I am likely to encounter.

I just bought one that I could just tap into the USB port and then into the wall for power, that's a simple solution, ask for one at your local electronic store.

Then just throw in the DVD and get some program to rip the contents of it to your computer.

EDIT: oh right I shouldn't help too much or you'll pass me :p

So I'm up and recording fine! I will likely have problems making the vids themselves but until I WR or PR, I'm doing great.  Any advice on how to make DVD Recorded vids would be greatly appreciated.

When you record to a DVD can't you just put the DVD into a DVD reader on your computer?  Might have to convert the file or something.

ok, this is for Jimmy or Illu or anyone who uses a DVD recorder.

Can I make a vid from an unfinalized DVD?  If I finalize a DVD-RW, can I delete everything and re-use it?

I think it might be possible to make vids from unfinalized DVDs but it's hard to find the right program.  But don't worry about that anyway because yes, you can erase finalized DVD-RWs.  Your DVD recorder should give you an option to unfinalize a DVD and after that you can just erase it like normal. =)

There is no need to even finalize DVD-RW's. My recorder doesn't even have a option for that on RW's. The computer will read the disc fine anyway.

Hmm, you sure you aren't confusing -RW with +RW?  I'm pretty sure I tried putting my DVD-RW in the computer without finalizing it but the program I was using couldn't read it.  According to this it's the +RWs that don't need to be finalized.

Ok, Im really confused.  That guide you linked me to Jimmy, well its good but I think theres a lot of extraneous stuff in there I dont need to do.

Can someone just give me a list of the programs I need to make vids off a DVD, or maybe a good short description which is to the point.  I dont care to encode stuff as good as Jimmy, any good qual vid will do.

Thanks in advance, I really need help here :x

Yeah sorry, there is a lot of stuff in that guide. :p    Just pay attention to this page.  You only need to download that one program and  if you answer the questions it gives you it should do everything for you.

Though I actually haven't tried it myself yet since it's fairly new, hopefully it will be easy.

How're you transfaring the vids from the dvd? If you use your capture card you might want to get a program/plugin that can change the current input to NTSC.

I use iuVCR, which has lovely settings for changing between PAL/NTSC, settings, color/gamma correction and preview.

If your vids look like that after being transfered with a +rw-disc: make sure your dvd records in NTSC. Most dvds have these in settings.

My DVD R/RW is knackered so i've binned it, so I have no choice but to use something external. The only problem I have now, i have to finalize the disc before it'll play on my dvd/video Combi. This is going to cost me a bomb in dvd's. even on SLP I only get 6 hours. But muh, it's fine, i'll find someway to do it. Even if it means attaching the dvd recorder to my PC every week or so and recording all my pr's that way.

tbh I should stick to the more reliable video capture and sell the bleeding thing on ebay. More mither than it's worth:x
