i was messing around on this and noticed that if you throw a mine just to the right of the door while strafing down the stairs at the start it will kill the three guards in the room and open the door. i think this should make the run a bit faster.

It will also lure more guards to come kill you, and lag the game a bunch. Also if done at full speed the explosion will still be happening when you get back to said door with keycard, either killing you or boosting you in an unproductive manner.

I guess it's "safer" in that it gets a lot of the more troublesome guards out of your way, but I can't see it being "faster".

it does cause lag thats true. however it is faster quite a bit infact. the explosion hits you as you are just about to enter the door to kill the key guard and not on the way back.the door being open and the guards being dead means the first part can be done practically as fast as on normal mode.

My original strat for this level not on LTK back in 2000 had this same strat with the remote mine...

Isn't the box strat like the oldest GE strat of all time? It was used by that guy from Ninendo who beat the cheat time on 00A vid

Yeah I probably used a variation of that strat going for the cheat.
