As pretty much everyone who went to the meet knows, I  bought 2 gold controllers, a gold N64, and a few useless parts and games that I don't care about. I got it all today, they LOOK fantastic but the sticks on the controllers are junk. I was wondering how hard it is to replace just the stick? I know YE's done it before, thanks!

Not hard! Just buy one and replace it!

Open it clean it, close it take one or two drop of oil in the root of the stick, dry it a bit with paper.

Though the problem might be that the control stick is a bit loose, then you might wanna fix it with some rubber band or anything, put it in the controller. Though you might want a new stick really :p

you're a car guy, it should be no problem.  You take it apart, pull out the stick, and put a new one back in where everything went.  I didnt even need to say that.  I've replaced more sticks and R buttons than anyone here I'd be willing to bet.  ( throw controllers around a lot) :p

Ghus Dark pwns at fixing controllers. That video is VERY nice. Many people could fix their own controllers by seeing that.

I opened my controller - it was sooo dusty inside.  I wasn't trying to fix anything though.  I tore it to pieces, slammed it on the ground, and it went in the trash.  F-ing mariokart.

Yeah, I've done it once and I used a one-page tutorial on the internet somewhere. The connection to the main board is just a little plug that slides in.

Opening the actual gray control stick unit is a different thing, however, and is much more complicated (springs jumping out etc). You shouldn't need to do that if you are replacing the control stick unit, but you do if you are cleaning and re-using it.

EDIT: If you have a controller with a clear underside you can see the blue plug where the control stick unit connects with the main board. It's a little rectangle thing.

Do an ebay search for "n64 thumbstick repair." Get some and I'll walk you through it.

I put Jim's chances of "getting some" at about zero.
