Publicly updated GEWR or POM POY rankings
« on: July 23, 2007, 08:57:00 pm »
GEWR... Even if another update does come, what's the point right?  It'll just get left in the dark for another year or two like every other time.  So...

Why don't we start up a new one or a new variant?  It would be really easy, and it would have public access for editing.  Somebody could create weekly backups in case some moron tries to screw with us, and we just make a site that a lot of us can update on their own.  Geocities would be just fine, but hopefully thengamer would host us.

---

It doesn't have to be the same as before, I mean who really needs the exact WR table copied over?  SA's awesome new site has all that info anyway.  Anyway, here are a few things that would be really easy to launch and by design would stay alive for much longer.  Both are monthly updates...

1)  keep the site going but allow anybody to update it.  Somebody agrees to handle a month, and they'll do it.  As it gets closer to next month, somebody else could volunteer.  Monthly updates with a writeup would be perfect and not too hard to do.

2)  only run POW/POM/POQ/POY.  Toss out POW maybe, that'd get left in the dark.  But we could start up a new site like PD had, just a POM/POY site.  Every month we decide based on overall play, not just WRs, who is POM and get going on something like that.  Good incentive, easy to do, etc.

3)  My favorite idea would just be to do a much smaller summary.  Recap the months WRs.  Then recap the months activity.  Recap any changes in WR totals and ranking changes, and then we decide in the first week who gets POM based on that information.

(Personally, I think if we ran that for GE AND PD, it would make a great new page for the-elite.net, which is basically useless right now, just a hub of links).

I think something like this could work as a new GE project instead of just sitting/complaining/knowing GEWR is dead.  Anybody willing to help or think its a good idea to take GEWR over?

I think this is a good idea and I would be willing to help with some things.

I love the idea, and I'd be willing to help.

Yea, this would be a lot more affective than the current page we have now. Plus updated would be much more frequent. I'll help out anyway I can.
Embrace the grind.

Nice idea.  We should somehow organize some sort of meeting to sort out the POM/POQ/POY awards, and anything else that comes up.  Then maybe host polls for who should get the awards based on statistics.  Also, the rules wouldn't have to be like they were for Clark's GEWR either.  Perhaps Clark/Come should post an opinion on the matter before moving on with a different GEWR page.

we don't need this.. why not make a new elite homepage as well? it's updated about as regularly as GEWR. whenever GEWR is updated now, you're (ie I am) way more excited then when it's done regularly, and it's way better than I could usually imagine. I don't think this new thing will be able to top it nor come close at all, but I guess time will tell.

could we not just keep the GEWR site, but actually use it? monthly updates and an actual announcement of player awards would make competing for many players, myself included, a fair bit more fun  ;)

well yeah luke, the idea is to create some sort of new page that is updated one a month.  The updating task would be easy to pass on to others, because NOBODY will want to do this for more than 6-7 months guaranteed.

Does anybody have any saved pages from early 2006 and on?  Would be great - we can also use SA's page to look for awards, just do the "list all WRs" thing he has.

And wouter - I mentioned if we did this monthly, and did it for PD as well monthly, it would make for a perfect front page for the-elite.  I love t-e.n updates but they're.. basically nonexistant.  As it stands, both the-elite.net and GEWR are pretty bland and not worth visiting.

I think that's why we have this message board and a chatroom... it would be better if someone just made some kind of updater extension that would sort out all the new times and add them to some extra page which thus lists new times and from which update they are. with that, it would also be much easier to update a manual page which has the dates of the times more accurately down.

I think enough people care about and try to follow GE but don't check the PR topic religiously, or know exactly how much people are moving around the rankings just by checking the boards and stuff.  Updates are a nice summary for the 80% of the elite that cares but isn't active in the GE boards.

Anyway, boss has a good idea with POM/POY stuff.  I'll check out SA's site when I get back from work and make a text file listing all WRs from each month, starting January 2006.

This is just an outline, I'm not calling this an update.  If you guys like this, I'd be willing to do something like this, more in depth, for each month until now.  It'd take me a couple days.  Anyway..  all credit goes to SA's site.

January 2006 saw a lot of Archives activity.  Karl Jobst comes back and sets 0:55 on SA/00A, causing 7 players to lose a WR on each.  Karl, Henrik and Bryan combined to set 3 new WRs on Train.  Illu overcomes a 5 WR defecit to top Cervone at 3rd in the WR charts.

1:33*         Train Secret Agent - Henrik Norgren (06.02.06)
1:34*         Train Secret Agent - Henrik Norgren (05.02.06)

Ilari Pekkala 5
Henrik Norgren 4
Ryan White 2
Michael Kirkness 2
Rayan I. 2
Jimmy Bauer 1
Luke Szklarz 1
Adam Matis 1

Summary:  Illu continues to set WR's as he climbs the rankings.  This month saw a lot of Train improvement across the board, with Henrik, Rayan, Illu all setting WRs here.  Illu started the month with 16 WRs, 9 behind Wouter.  Henrik had 9 in 6th place.  At the end of this month, Illu is up to 19 and Henrik unfortunately remains at 9 where he sets WRs that don't help his count.

Right now, the elite's total time is  1:16:22, and the top of the WR rankings look like this:

Boss 42
Wouter 25
Illu 19
Cervone 15
Alex 10
Henrik 9
Goose 8
Graham 7
Trent 7
Jimbo 6
Karl 6
Bcks 5
Michael Kirkness 5

It is clear with this activity that over the next few months, things will be changing a lot.

1:56*         Train 00 Agent - Henrik Norgren (16.03.06)
0:23        Bunker 1 Secret Agent - Rayan I. (15.03.06)
1:43*         Aztec Secret Agent - Bryan Bosshardt (14.03.06)
1:29*         Train Secret Agent - Henrik Norgren (13.03.06)
1:59*         Train 00 Agent - Bryan Bosshardt (11.03.06)
1:23        Caverns Secret Agent - Ilari Pekkala (08.03.06)
1:50        Surface 1 00 Agent - Ilari Pekkala (06.03.06)
0:57        Facility 00 Agent - Ryan White (05.03.06)
0:47        Facility Agent - Alex Anderson (03.03.06)
0:57        Facility Secret Agent - Ryan White (02.03.06)
1:03        Caverns Agent - Luke Szklarz (02.03.06)
0:47        Facility Agent - Trent Hovis (01.03.06)
1:50        Surface 1 Secret Agent - Ilari Pekkala (01.03.06)
1:05*         Train Agent - Henrik Norgren (01.03.06)

Totals:  21 WRs, 10 untied

Illu 8
Henrik 3
Alex 2
Boss 2
Rayan 2
Ryan White 1
Luke Szklarz 1
Trent Hovis 1
(for the love of god I can't figure out whats wrong here.  Oh well)

Summary:  Train, with the new strategy, continues to be devoured.  Boss comes around and crushes the WR, and Henrik comes right back with a strong response.  There are plenty of scattered WRs, however the biggest notes are from Train being strongly improved and Illu pounding away on Aztec.  We see many of the same names emerging to the top this month, and another strong improvement by Illu.

The Elite nears 1:15:59 this month, 6 seconds short.  Illu is now only back 3 WRs from Wouter, 24-21, and henrik's improvements are topped by Alex.  Goose is not far behind.  The 3 active players sit at 12-11-10 WRs each now.

Nice ideas there Octo, and nice summaries as well! :)

SA, let me know if you have problems with me using your table source code for the WRs.  Right now I'm just getting a layout down, and before I finish this and release it and start working on more months, you'll be credited and linked etc.  Looked to talk t oyou before doing this :)

Anyway, let me know what you think of...

www.thengamer.com/GE/22-M...y2006.html

As a layout and design.  The links from month to month are at the bottom.  POMhistory will be created later, we'll decide on POM each month, and we'll do this for every month in the future.  For the WR standing, it will have all WR holders, with +/- counts in different color.  Also.. I am not going to do anything with a WR table like GEWR did, listing them all in order.  It's all in order at SA's site!

I'll make a new topic once I've done 3-4 months completely and this is actually running.  Then we'll publicly host it, and give out the password, and backup elsewhere, so that when one updater decides to take a month off somebody else can just do it, it only takes an hour per month once the template is there.

So February is up, linked at the bottom of the january page.

Right now I'm going to make a few more of these, a homepage, then structure the POM page.  Hopefully as these are posted, we can get consensus POM decisions, though most are pretty obvious.  I'll avoid doing writeups though because I think POM should be an elite-wide decision, not my decision.  I'll make a new topic once I make the frontpage, about 6-7 months worth, and get hosted somewhere (probably thengamer).  I'll edit in here as I finish more months.

march and april are up.  The links at the bottom are filled through 2006 and 2007, but obv wont work until the files are on thengamer.  I decided to go ahead for the rest of 2007 because changing the links on a gazillion pages is a bitch and I don't know how to source something in HTML besides css.

april:  use it to get to march

it should be called like latest new wrs or so, some aren't untied anymore.

www.thengamer.com/GE/22-M...y2006.html

change that to untied arch 55s

www.thengamer.com/GE/22-M...y2006.html

change that to 3 tied wrs each

www.thengamer.com/GE/22-M...y2006.html

I think for the summaries with player totals, you should include every player, not the "top WR setters" and then list 6 or so :p  as mentioned there, you might skim over someone in the longer list, so putting everyone in the summary makes that much less likely to happen.

also, Bryan lowered b2 00 by 4 sec

and, according to that page, the total time didn't change! :p

other than several mistakes here and there, it's not looking bad. but methinks since it's just in an early stage, it's easy to say it will always be updated within a week of a new month, but after a while this might lose interest as well. it's not like the GEWR didn't start out well, extremely well at that. it's just that Clark seems to have lost interest or simply has too much going on in his life to be updating it. and I suppose same goes for Steve.

another thing, if it's meant to be different from GEWR, I'd like to know if there are plans to do prior years yet, since it seems that what's been done now is just there to fill up the gap from GEWR.
