The Weekly/Monthly/Centennially Goals Thread
« on: February 22, 2007, 07:04:00 pm »
OK, I'm tired of sucking at GE and not getting a bunch of PRs in a night. I've hit a wall. So now I am going to change some things up that I hope will help me get to the next level.

I will from now on only play a specific couple of levels a night. Usually, I jump around from level to level, which worked well enough when I had a huge gap to improve to. Well, the gap is smaller now, and it's going to take concentration on specific levels to start lowering times again.

I will post levels that I want to improve, and the time that I expect to hit each week starting with today. This will hopefully keep motivated enough to stay with a level.

I hope some of the newer players will also use this thread to try and set goals for themselves as well. This isn't just for me, but maybe a community-wide thing perhaps?

Anyways, enough rambling. Post your goals here!

I expect to have these times beaten by 2/25/07.

I'd have thought we'd have a topic like this show up a lot earlier.

Times with a * I have failed.

Dam SA 127
Facility SA 110*
Surface SA 200
Silo 00 235
Frigate A 33 AND 1 succesful bug throw
Surface 2 A 55*
Bunker 2 00 130*
Statue SA/00 228*
Depot SA 52*
Train SA 200
Control A/SA/00 415*/444*/510
Caverns 00 420
Cradle A 44*
Aztec A 155

Total Time 1:37:45. This would put me 6th in the UK rankings and ahead of Durk. Thanks to Train earlier I only need another 8 seconds.
My Aztec 201 needed body armour and I'm not quite sure how much time that costs me.

Maybe it's meh for you, Brian, but I got a PR (by 16 seconds no less) that I doubt I would have gotten if I hadn't made this thread. I only played those 4 levels last night, and made some awesome improvements in 2 of them. I hope others can get the same out of it that I expect to.

Outdrawed, the reason he's picky on your topic is because you've misspelled Bryan's name a few times. ;)

As for me, my goals are top 100's for GE and PD in 2007 and by the looks of it, I'm on par for that.

Achieved - Uk Time Rank = 6th (1:37:41)

Not bad progress while I've been off work to say I started the year in 8th place 2 minutes behind Shane Garner.

Acheived my Aztec A time aswell.

I think that's the biggest thing holding me back. I have a couple levels that are just disgusting (namely the 4 I put in this thread) that if I could cut those down to where I want them, I'd lop off 10-15 minutes easy.

Last week's goals

Dam 00 - 2:40
Jungle SA - 2:15
Bunker 1 00 - 1:40
Control 00 - 6:30

My times

Dam 00 - 2:47
Jungle SA - 2:28
Bunker 1 00 - 1:48
Control 00 - 6:25

I am still very pleased with this. I only hit 1/4 of my goals, but I PRd each level, and cut my total time down 2:37 just with these 4 levels. I also cracked the 1 hour barrier on 00, so I'm very pleased.

All these GE newcomers are.. funny. Honestly, you shouldn't think much about what you're playing. Just pick a level that you like, watch a vid to see how it's done and do your best. I learned that because many times I tried to estipulate goals (like a bunch of times to be achieved), and they NEVER worked. What worked was casually playing any level I felt good with.

Just an example: I was on a track to pass Slayer on brazilian rankings. Got War 26, and the first thought was "I NEED 48 OR BETTER ON SA!11". Then started playing it, and got bored preety fast. I knew that playing it wouldn't bring any good results, so I just felt like playing Rescue PA and in a couple of hours got the points I wanted.

Maybe that's not the way you guys do your playing sessions, but whatever, that might help someone. And in conclusion, this topic is worthless, imo.

gregkvbm,

I don't think you noticed the part where I set 4 PRs on 4 levels that I am absolutely horrid in, knocking total time down over 2 minutes.

Anyways, this is all motivation. If I put out goals and don't come close to making them, I'll be upset. I get excited when I have a good time and a player much better than me says 'good job!' or whatever. Also other people seem to be using it so yay.

yeah, newbies are funny. I'm a veteran poster at a poker forum and it's awesome to make fun of the people who suck at poker and have like 3 posts. I don't have a problem with you thinking that I suck and my methods are useless, but regardless, this IS helping me lower my times, and until I get a direct request to not post here, I will continue to do every week.

:lol  You can call me Vitor. Anyway, take it easy. I'm not calling you a newbie (on the bad.. way), it's more like a newcomer, so I'm trying to advice you here. I'm surely not one of the best players around, but I know what I'm saying.

Goals doesn't work often because, for example, let's say you estipulate 1:30 Dam SA. Then you get it, and felt like you could get at least 1:26. Won't you go for it? Will you just leave that crap time and move on to some other level only because that was your goal?

Giving another example here. I'm currently playing Deep Sea PA, and I've estipulated a "goal" of around 3:20 (currently have 3:24). That's just what I'm thinking now. And if I get, let's say 3:19, and feel like I'm motivated enough for the WR (3:14), I'll give it a shot. Maybe I'll fail, but at least I did what I felt like to.

Now if I had estipulated "goals" like, Deep Sea PA 3:20, then Rescue A 1:28, etc, I'd just stop with something lame and move to the other level, even if I don't want to. This is different from saying like "Someday I wanna have those times: ", just like "dreaming" about it. We all do that.

Anyway, if you just wanna "have fun" and not improve your playing skills at the same rate as everyone else, keep at it, and good luck. I'm not going to bother anymore :p

vitor (i was pretty sure that was your name but I called Boss Brian so I was erring on the safe side :p  ),

I AM a newbie. I can accept that. And I think it's unfair to think I'm "settling" for times that I get my goals in. I'm not going to quit playing Control 00 for all of time just because I reached my goal of 6:25. I'm not playing it currently because I hate that level and I have other levels I want to improve on.

Also, I've already duped my bunker PR two more times, and I've played Dam 00 after getting my 2:47 a couple more times, so I'm certainly not settling. But if I don't put these "goals" out here, I find I will just bounce around between levels and really never get better at them.

I think if everybody here is serious about wanting the-elite to become more known around the internet (hence the links added to youtube videos and whatnot), everyone's gonna have to accomodate us amateurs and our silly little quirks that we believe (whether a fantasy or reality) will help us get better.

Edit: I should also mention that I work a full-time job and play poker to supplement that income. I have maybe 1-2 hours a day M-F to play GE...and that's when I'm not sharing the TV with my parents. (Thank God, moving out this weekend!) So I don't have the ability to focus on one level 2-3 hours at a time. I'm just trying to do what I can with the time and skills(none) that I have.

Yeah, I will never be as good as you guys. A VERY high goal I"m setting myself is top 100, but I don't even know how realistic that is. Who knows, maybe I'll surprise myself and become a more disciplined player in the future.

Most of the fun about GE speedrunning for me, though, is watching the videos. The top players are just absolutely incredible, and it's fun to just be in the same "environment" as these guys. I saw Wouter's 00 run about a year ago, and almost wet my pants watching it. I was just completely in awe. Now, he's making stupid jokes to my posts.

don't be so self-centered, I do it to about every post. the 'stupid' part is just your opinion. I think many people are stupid, does that mean they should cease to exist? equally, should I stop posting like I do?

woutsie,

I know you make them to every post. My point was a year ago I basically worshipped this guy who was God at GE, and now I'm chatting with him. Maybe it's not a big deal to you, but considering how much I love the game and movie, I see it as pretty cool.

Oh, stupid != bad. I laugh at some of them, and others I go "where the hell did that come from?"
